Correct, mandating their desired aesthetic. Audubon is an extreme environmental organization that is unaccountable and lies, and does not deserve your support!

Audobon is a lobbying group, organized and funded by bird lovers. At present, they are more numerous, better funded, and far FAR better organized than kitesurfers. In my experience, most kitesurfers don't do much more than gripe, leaving a handful of motivated guys to do all the work. Ask yourself: if you were a town councilor and faced conflicts between two groups, one that was nationally known with many members and obvious funding, vs a couple of guys in wetsuits, who would you side with? Until kiters get organized AND INVOLVED, the battle will continue to be one-sided.
Birds are threatened by HUMAN ENCROACHMENT. It's not just kites, or just dogs, or any particular activity: it's PEOPLE. Many studies show this. But again, if you're a legislator, it's easier to go after a small minority than to ban everyone. As kitesurfers, we need to make everyone aware that, if protecting birds is the real goal (rather than simply placating bird lovers), it's an all-or-nothing proposition. Banning kites and dogs while allowing everyone else means the bird populations will still be threatened.
Which means the real decision is to make a beach a wildlife preserve, closing it to everyone during nesting season, or to allow access with some reasonable protections that allow shared use. Kitesurfers need to expose the hypocrisy of banning certain activities on the beach (what's next? Frisbee? Bocce?) and also make people aware that what Audobon ultimately wants is full closure.
And we also need to admit that the birds do need their own protected areas - when they use them, where they use them. But for public beaches, communities should stand up and say those beaches are for shared use, and with reasonable distance restrictions can be used by everyone.
Last but not least, if they only thing you're doing is posting here (or just reading), you're contributing nothing... GET INVOLVED! Write some emails to your town councilors, pester other kiteboarders to do the same, patrol your beach and get the crazies in line, etc!

Tom go over to Masskiting.com and you would be hard pressed to find a local group of people more organized and involved. Lots of info on beach access and the rules of each. Constant reminders to obey the rules and tell others. Beach clean ups are organized , signs are put at beaches to remind riders the does and don't . Petitions are posted and members are encouraged to get involved.
This current situation is a hot topic and there is planning going on as we speak...

anyone ever heard the term "scapegoat"?
scapegoat: a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place

West Dennis is a prime example of what is happening. What started out as courding off a small section of the nesting area, and shutting off part of the parking for a few weeks, has turned into blocking off half of the parking for just about the whole summer, and yesterday I noticed now , more area of the beach has been blocked, specifically a small path thru the beach grass, to the launch area. What's next ?? WD used to be one of my favorite summer windsurfing destinations, no longer.

Are kiters suggesting to simply be defiant and ignore these rules?
That won't exactly be a solution, but rather to work against you in the long run by setting a poor example....

What do you think? Most of the fun apparently is throwing airs 10 feet off the beach in the swimming area for video and blocking off as much beach real estate as a small flea market... ( Hardings?? First Encounter?? )
At least they figured out that Jumpy Castling is a different sport than windsurfing. No collateral kook damage this time!
And BTW, without Audubon, there would be a hell of a lot more private inaccessible shoreline...

without the kennedy administration and the national seashore, there would be a lot more private inacessable beachfront. i'm quite sure one of the tenets is public use of the seashore for recreation.
