Anyone have any recommendations on roof rack systems that are not too expensive? |

Sportrack SR1010 - actually made by Thule
around $150 to $200 new
fits many cars and holds boards + sailbag easily
mine was free - borrowed from bro-in-law |

I never had any failures with Thule, and some components I'm using right now are 25 or 30 YO. That's inexpensive in my book... If I was cash tight, I would buy used Thule and stay with the system afterwards. |

Thule rules! Great experience, transformed my boring Sedan into a windsurfing vehicle. They've got a good website that lets you plug in the make, model and year of your car and they tell you what's right for you.
I hear the newer versions are designed to not 'whistle' when you drive. All good.

I've often bought sets of roof rack brackets and made my own crossbars and tie-down points. It ate up LOTS of my time, but it saved a few bucks and let me improve functionality and safety over the off-the-shelf stuff. We do NOT want to scrimp on safety.
Then there are swap meets and REI's semiannual "garage sales". |

I have two cars. On one, the bar makes noise. To get rid of it, I leave the Chinook rack pad on the front bar. If you can, avoid black ones because the become faded in a few months. Light grey or metallic is better.
I would stick with the square Thule bars because of the huge legacy. Finding used accessory, replacement parts etc... will be easier.
BTW, most problems I have seen are related to the tie down straps. Don't skimp on them, and double up for long trips. When you buy, don't be be impressed by the strap itself and give a good look to the buckle. The weak point is a pin that acts like an hinge. |

What's the deal with your name?
28DB17EE-D364-CB83-7547994C522F53E2, surely there must be an interesting story here? It's so warm and fuzzy, I get such an image of who you might be. |
