Not that I anticipate sailing a formula board in strong winds, I'd be interested in seeing what they look like in 20+ knots of wind. Any videos out there?

check out Steve Bodner's blog:

all they do on SF Bay is sail Formula boards in 20+. Not sure if he has videos, but he has plenty of pictures.

Here is one:

Just guessing, but the above video looks like a 9.2 sail in about 20 knots. Just reaching shots without showing any upwind or downwind.

go to youtube and put in formula windsurfing racing and there are lots of videos.

I have raced formula in 25-30 knots with a sails as small as 6.5 or 7.5. I would never do it for fun, too crazy.

No vid, but guys in Berkeley are now starting to use 7.8 sails and 56 cm fins for the normal Berkeley days around 14-27 mph.
Formula works fine down to long boom 5.7 sails, using fins in the 60 range.

That makes sense, thanks.

@techno900 - No plans to try it, but was curious what it might be like. I also saw a video where a FW sailed neck and neck with a high performance trimaran. Four grand of hardware keeping up with four million's worth. Pretty impressive.

Used to free ride mine in 15 knots with a 7.0 on a 50cm. Worked great but it's still light to medium wind. From 3 minutes ish:
