Small supporting muscles tend to get disproportionally weaker as we age, and this contributes to a lot of "aging" problems - hurting backs, shoulders, hips, elbows, knees. Strengthening the small muscles can reduce a lot of these problems. Once the damage is acute, you may need the specific exercises a good PT may be able to show you.
If you're lucky enough not to be in pain, mix it up! Watch a typical adult move: the same patterns over and over. Watch a child play (away from a screen, that is): lots of different movements, natural "whole body exercise".
Fortunately, windsurfing is a sport that makes it easy to mix it up. Something as simple as switching to a much smaller (or, for freestylers, larger) fin can make you use completely different muscle groups. Or learn a few new tricks and skills. Practice light wind freestyle instead of bitching about "no wind". Participate in local races and let others show you how much you still can learn. Go SUP-sailing in waves. Mix it up, and build up all these little support muscles! |
