Teach someone and give back to the sport, I say! With the goal of over 500 sailors for the T293 Worlds coming up and 1000 windsurfers at Defi as evidence that windsurfing is alive and fabulous, just find a way to make "continental USA" a fabulous place to wind.

335 youngsters registered for T293 Worlds in France...with four weeks to go. Impressive. T293 world wide fleet and participation is right up there.....with the Opti, Laser, and 420 packs. |

Anyone know why windsurfing has remained so popular in Europe? |

I can think of two reasons.
First, better environment for the sport in general. Many seaside resorts in Europe use public beaches, good windsurfing spots included. People coming to vacation have opportunity to try the sport under good instruction, and on a right equipment. Some hotels with private beaches allow independent surf stations as well. I've been to one place with about 100 boards and sails included in the package (lessons priced separately). I cannot name a single large resort in North America that would offer good hardware and instruction.
And, vacations in Europe are longer, so statistically there is better chance for getting people on board.

Perhaps they don't have the power boat culture like we have. If wakeboarding and waterskiing wasn't so accessible here, maybe more people would be into windsurfing. _________________ /w\ |

It may also be caused in part by the highly cramped real estate everywhere. Around my place in Canada, I see many people with small dinghys or cats in their backyard. That's a lot of occasional sailors. There is also a huge number of dinghys racing just for fun on some evenings and weekends.
I am on the impression that I couldn't afford the same in Europe, while windsurfing would still be possible. I was in Germany a few weeks ago, not close to any large expanse of water, and was surprised by the number of boards I saw, either in Westfalias or in appartment windows. |

BTW windsurfing gear in Europe is more expensive (less affordable?) than in US.
