The attitude of 'if you're not planing, you're not windsurfing' is what killed the sport. It's so much more complicated and so much more physically demanding now compared to when windsurfing was insanely popular. It's also so dependent on wind conditions to be using 'planing only' gear.

Learn on a long board. It will never get old unless you let people pressure you into believing that it is not cool.

It definitely does depend upon the individual, and the individuals location. Speaking of location for instance, it's crazy that the schools try to use the same techniques and exact same gear in the Gorge that they do in Florida. Nuts.

But long boards died out for a reason - most people moved on to something that had more thrills. Some people always will love the non planning feeling, and that's of course great for you too, but most people wanted something more and moved on 2 decades back.

Today, long boards in waves for instance do offer that feeling, formula, and a host of things offer the feeling people want too, there's more than one way to do this, but the wide board 'revolution' is 15 years old, and it's well past time to adjust teaching methods to reflect that.

And that is precisely what has nearly killed the sport outside a few high wind areas, the sport became too specialized, difficult and expensive gear reliant.
How much will a formula setup cost? Well it's all going to have to be brand new because that gear is hard to come by used outside maybe the board.
Giant carbon boom $1K
Giant race sails $1K each
Giant fins $300 each?
Giant 520 or 550 mast $1K
Whereas for a longboard;
Used longboard $500
490 mast $500 new, available used
Plenty sails and booms available used to 10M

Beaglebuddy is absolutely right.

No that's not what happened. Most people stopped windsurfing. Those that remained were the ones who moved on to something that had more thrills.

Many people came to windsurfing (and windsurf now) because they like (or love) sailing, and windsurfing is minimalist sailing.
