Almost a third, or maybe a quarter, of the really consistent Reno windsurfing crowd (2 of us to be exact) have focused on Lahontan this year and it's been fantastic. Others have sporadically gone there. Washoe is now a waist deep silty mud hole, you can't imagine it (unless, of course, you have sailed the bay at very low tide.) However Lahontan is drained to supply Nevada's agriculture heart in Fallon and is dropping by the day. Most of the time Lahontan has been in the 5.0 to 5.5 range with often waist high swell and clean water.

Sun Jun 22 at the Stick. Arrive late in a ugly day, fog rolling in makes the wind really up an down. Soldier on from 3:45 to 5:15 ... and then call the day.

Mon Jun 23:
Coyote. Nice day, powered up with 5.0 at the outside markers. Nice swell and very little chop: jump and jump and jump. Cool Not many people out, about a dozen or so and 1 kite.

Tue Jun 24: WINDY like in Van moving gusts. 3.7 overpowered Shocked

Thu 26-Fri 27
Stick, in very messy conditions. The city is in the fog and too late to go to TI without being stuck in traffic ... not too fun and short sessions.

Sat 28-Sun 29
Coyote: perfect 5.0 and 4.3 conditions. Just great sailing at the channel markers with little chop and lots of swell. Lot of windsurfers out, including young sailors and children learning.

TI 5:30 to 7:00, 6.2 115 L. Barely planing and fighting to stay upwind until 6:20 when it picked up, nice sunset session, even got in one jump.

Got in at the pipe just as the fisherman were pulling in this 5' monster in the photos.

Icthyologists, care to name the species?

that looks like a match. Beautiful fish, felt sorry for it actually. But them were some happy fishermen.

Common sand shark, just like the one stuck on a pole at FlyingTigers in the late '80's.

Although the graph shows a great deal of wind, the shoreline didn't seem that windy. Three times as many kites as windsurfers.

That shark sure does look like a Brown Smoothhound, but if it is, it's smashed the record. California Fish and Wildlife Marine Sportfish Identification web page lists the largest recorded at 3'1".
