|
|
I have 3 boards and this Techno 112L just keeps breaking it seems. No problems whatsoever with the other two boards. The first crack was by the prior owner; it was fixed. I cracked it again earlier this season (repaired by the same repair person) and now once more for good measure thanks to a strong gust. 5 days before I leave for the Gorge. Ugh.
Should I be looking at getting another board or just keep getting it repaired? Perhaps by someone else? It's about $75 each time.

This is almost certainly from getting slammed, boom/mast hitting front of board. I know because that's how a friend of mine did same to his board - like you, twice. The first repair was done by a surf shop for $150, but they obviously didn't deal with the broken foam, just glassed over with a single thin layer (I suspect like your "repair"). I repaired for him the second time by gluing broken foam first, then a 1-2-3 layer of S-glass applied in a single lay-up, first layer shaped to the cracks, second lager, third over whole area. That did it, board like new. Note, to glue the foam, I used Gorilla glue, which is great for this purpose.

Get one of those mast base Deviator / Deflector or whatever they called them. I think you can mash your deck in too if you use them.
If you're coming to the Gorge, be prepared for damage. It's been kinda gusty.

As Jamie said, that's structural, not just skin. After one more (but better) repair, it's time for some nose and mast padding. NSI in Hood River sells nose pads and deck padding material. I began using the latter (I cut and glue a narrow, color-matched, 1"-wide arc of deck padding around the top of the front end) 20 years ago and cut my nose damage rate from several per season to zero in 20 years. The past decade or so I've also put a mast pad on the mast where it hits the nose.
If I'm not crashing I'm not learning, and I want my fun limited by my skill and by threat to my body, not to my gear.
