Last week I forecast big winds for Tuesday May 6 for the Bay Area, Southern California and the Gorge.
I illustrated why these big winds would probably happen by using an animation of the output from the old low resolution GFS model. For fun, scroll to the bottom, and look at that animation for what I forecast for today last week.
In the top image you can see the same model output for 3PM today Tuesday May 6. Notice how the wind pattern is much the same in both animations but if you look closely you can see that the wind is more NORTH in the Central Valley in the "today" model output. And looking at the sensors around the Bay Area you will notice that this NORTH flow is keeping the Sherman Island wind weaker than expected. And I expected much stronger wind aloft that would stir up the surface wind into the upper 20's to low 30's but I was wrong on that point.
But overall it was a good forecast with some sites in Southern California, the Bay Area and the Gorge seeing wind in the mid to upper 20's.
It is a rare day when the entire west coast Rocks at the same time.
