big fins 64+ generate a lot of drag at slow speeds too much for a small sail to overpower! try a smaller fin with your smaller sails and your formula board |
haha..ya i meant to write sheet out,, so even when im typing i still automatically think sheet out in a gust,
will try to find a smaller fin, makes sense to me, there sure seems to be varying views on what works on a formula board. _________________ i like longboards. |

That is because next to a longboard, a formula board has the greatest single sail wind range of any other type of board so people use them in many types of terrain, conditions & levels of sailing.
There is nothing wrong with people telling you "it can't be done" as long as they stay out of your way while you are doing it. That is one of the beauties of this sport, the challenge of doing something new & constantly pushing your limits.

"It can't be done".....
Since 2002, I've been saying a long boom cambered 5.7 works just fine on a Formula board, mine being a 95 cm with a 60 cm fin.
How many guys say it's IMPOSSIBLE? That at least a 9.0 is needed to balance the equation? On Starboard forums, even the moderators said it was impossible, Ian and one of the Euro racers.
Guess what? "5.7's work just fine on Formula boards.
And 2 years ago, one of the CalCups held in late August, the winner used a 7.9 NP sail, in the lightest possible winds, 10-19mph, against the locals at Berkeley using up to 12 meter sails, and they complained the winds were at the minimum around a few of the marks each race. |

for my 100+ kilo carcass 8.x is the smallest sail i put on a FreeFormula - like the 7.9
for learning I have put a 5.x on the board and it worked for a noobie
heavier noobies needed more volume than the 170 liter wide board
you CANNOT beat the glide of a longboard in light wind
DIV II's still can win the light wind open class races
in the race where the 7.9 won, sounds like a longboard would have won hands down
RS:X and Formula in light winds - require sail pumping
no thanks for me
