Will silicon spray used for waterproofing shoes help strengthen sailcloth that has lost its mylar backing?

I use junk sails for land sailing (mountain board, windsurfing rig & parking lot). I could (and will) buy more junk sails, but I'm curious about whether the spray idea will help.

Strengthen? No.

The mylar backing separates from the sail cloth because the adhesive which holds the two together breaks down over time. I've seen it in new old stock sails which were never unrolled or used. Nothing will reverse the breakdown of the adhesive. Nothing short of panel replacement will strengthen the sail.

I'm afraid both of you correctly understood my poor use of "strengthen." I was hoping the silicon spray would make the sailcloth more impervious to wind. I believe both of you are saying "no that doesn't work."

Doubt it will make it more impervious to wind, either, except maybe on a microscopic level. Try placing a "want" ad here on iWindsurf to get some newer junk sails.

Get a big paintbrush and a gallon of latex driveway paint. Never mind the weight; the ground's holding it up.

Del, you might get lucky finding a decent small sail to use for your parking lot sailboard. Likely, someone has a sail they don't use or need any more and it could be had for the price of shipping. What size(s) do you use?

Thombiz,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I would rather have windsurfers start land sailing and use their surplus sails themselves or give them to beginners.

The best sail sizes for land sailing mountain boards seems to be about 4.5 to 6.5, though I do use sizes from 3.7 to 8.5. I'm careful to make sure I am not overpowered while land sailing.

Isobars, I might experiment in a small area with latex paint, though I expect it to crack and break off as soon as the sail flexes.

Del: I collect older gear for my windsurf beginners, and always have more sails than I know what to do with - even though I occasionally destroy one myself with my still somewhat inept go at landsailing. Don't know about shipping from SoCal, but I could put a batch together for you if you wanted them

Me, too ... plus the weight. That was a joke. Smile
