Friday Thoughts:

Occurs to me that additional useful items might include some 5 gal buckets to collect the smaller but still annoyingly sharp rocks rather than toss them around? Might be better than plastic bags?

Also, anyone planning on using sledge or wrecking bar to deal with some of the boulder sharp edges or cement block obstructions might bring a pair of safety goggles just in case.

Finally, since it is officially Earth Day tomorrow, we should have additional "cover" for our activities at the water line.

See you tomorrow/Saturday at 9AM.

Cheers, David

By all accounts, a successful day.

We had a total of 15 participants (including with planning process), 17 counting Vela and Isaac.

Given that a picture is worth a thousand word, I’ll save myself some time.

Here are several “before” photos to help document what was being improved for posterity:

xxxxxxxxxxxx

Old stairs - almost impossible to reach that first step after exhausting session…….

<Pt. Isabel Stairs - Before.jpg>

Downwind launch, not bad until the gravel ended - then slippery/sharp rocks plus some fin-breakers….

<Pt. Isabel Downwind Launch - Before.jpg>

Proposed site of New Upwind Launch - amazing what even an extra 10 yards of upwind distance can add, but those slippery/large rocks were killers…..

Now several “after” photos showing what some enthusiasts with the right tools can accomplish in less that 2 hours:

Working on stairway - note requisite supervisory crew, Kevin needed lots of advice….. Smile

The back-breaking work to clear the lower portion of Downwind/Old launch. Including two participants, Amy and Leander (step-daughter and grandson, respectively), who I keep trying to get back on the water (in Amy’s case) or hooked (Leander, her son). There’s some hope, as Amy used to instruct WS at Cal Adventures back in the late 90’s.

Downwind launch, no longer quite the hassle even below water line:

The new Upwind launch pathway/ramp plus water access path with most significant rocks removed (Jim was great help):

Another shot of the new Upwind launch access way:

Most of our valiant crew!

In conclusion, thanks everyone for showing up, working safely and diligently, and getting so much done. All while having a good time and avoiding any hassles from other park users or Rangers. Whenever anyone asked “what’s going on”, the answer was “It’s Earth Day and we are just cleaning up the shoreline, making it safer for kids, dogs, and the public” - worked like a charm….. Smile

Next step is to explore getting some additional gravel delivered and spread. This may be accomplished by the Park staff, but have to explore how to go about it.

Thanks again everyone.

See you on the water soon I trust.

Cheers, David

P.S. Still finding posting photo attachments a challenge - more to come....

A few more photos, including the most important ones - of the whole crew!

Well, almost, as Amy and Leander had to bail prematurely.

Great work everyone - and we were suitably rewarded that PM with near-epic winds at His Lords.

Cheers, David

To all Pt. Isabel sailors,

Many participants from last year's effort have signed up for another launch improvement party this coming Friday, June 19th. Low tide is at 8:41 AM at -0.75 ft.

We expect to arrive around 8:15 AM to take advantage of that low tide and hopefully minimal chop. Probable duration will be around two hours.

That timing should allow us to do some boulder shifting at the outside water-line area of the existing graveled launch ramp. Other challenges may include upgrading the existing concrete steps and the "southern" secondary launch area (still mainly a dream). Join us if you can!

Photos from last year's inaugural event can be seen at the following iWind Forum post: 10 Apr 2014 20:59 Post subject: Pt. Isabel Launch Work-Party April 19th

Equipment suggestions are in the initial announcement email copied below.

Cheers, David & Carol

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Folks,

Season appears to be ramping up. Although I missed yesterday’s winds, from the graphs they were sustained and very good.

Carol and I have started planning another PI launch improvement party. After minimal discussion, we picked next Friday, June 19th as the optimum day given tides, park usage, etc.

Low tide that morning is at 8:41 AM and is at -0.75 ft.

I’d suggest we plan to rendezvous at 8:15 AM - coffee drinks in hand?

Although it is a weekday, losing another day to tide shift would give us even less access plus add many more curious park visitors (and dogs) to the mix. Moving the day earlier in the week would result in even earlier low tide which becomes more challenging for later risers.

Much of our work from last year remains in place. However, the “gravel path” is gnarlier, the steps are again a challenge, and there are some larger boulders at the low tide line across the front of the gravel path. These weren’t dealt with last year mostly due to tide not permitting access. I’m also still interested in improving the initial effort to create a second more southerly launch point - coming down the same steps and then turning left about 10 yards.

Tools/Equipment: What seemed to work are the following: breaking bars; sledge hammers; crowbars; pickaxes; pry-bars; shovels; garden boots (heavy duty); and gloves (essential for barnacle protection, etc).

We again hope to keep activities “off the radar” and/or of minimal impact so as not to trigger “official" concerns.

If there’s sufficient interest, I’d post it on iWindsurf forum. Please feel free to share with other PI sailors as desired.

Please also RSVP if you plan to join us this coming Friday, June 19th.

Cheers, David
