Rowing (rowing machine), the only thing that I have found that uses all the same muscle groups as windsurfing, and in a similar way.
I just use my old'ish Bowflex set up in the rowing configuration, throw on some good music and have at it. Gotta have a sliding seat, or it's worthless.

Well, for people who don't know how to rig or sail well windsurfing can be a great workout

Or people who just sail hard. It can be an active sport or a passive sport, by choice in most conditions.

Lap swimming. I'm never tired in the spring when the NW'erlies start.

That being said, why is it that when I sail, my weight before and after differ by sometimes up to 5 pounds? I.e., I weigh myself at night, and the next day after sailing I'm usually 3 to 5 pounds lighter? Am I losing that much H2O from sweating in my wetsuit?

Spent the last couple years bodyboarding and bodysurfing (w/ fins) every weekend and that has kept me in great shape for windsurfing season.

Also, have been doing a lot of skateboard LDP (long distance pumping) and now that I have developed the right technique and acquired the right components, I go miles on flats/trails without ever putting a foot down, surfing an endless concrete wave and carving the hell out of it while getting a great cardio workout and working my lower body and back. I recommend it to all boardheads here, it's so incredibly convenient, fun and beneficial!

Hasn't exactly been great swell that last few weeks.
The trouble with this is if there is no swell you are
not that inspired to go out.

Wave sailing is a pretty good workout, if you stay in the impact zone, jump on the way out, and never step off your board.

Yoga has been useful to me for improving proprioception, balance, and coordination. It has helped some aspects of waterstart for me.

Yoga also gives reasonably good work for some "push" muscles, though little for the "pull" muscles. Most yoga also does not do much for cardio conditioning.

Yoga's pull deficiency however, can make it a sort of nice counter to windsurfing. Yesterday I sailed for a couple of hours in the afternoon, then did a yoga session at 7PM. The result was a feeling of having worked pretty much everything.
