Are alcohol, drugs, and sex the prerequisites of fun in your world view? Wind, water, foam, fiber, dacron or x-ply provide fun to me that I can't even express, and better than sex on any given 25 knot plus day. I could live without sex, but windsurfing, NO WAY!

You need f**king help, man.

Unfortunately, Mr. B, there's a huge segment of today's society that doesn't want to and is cultivated not to. It's the "personal responsibility" argument all over again.
I buy into many of the arguments from the left... but on this one, I think society, our schools, our churches, our courts and legal system, parents, etc., give young people a huge pass. Young people often do NOT have to live with the choices they make, and we don't do enough to give them what they need for that (example: critical thinking skills).

LOL, I know, but according to Isobars you don't windsurf so I wouldn't expect you to understand.

How so, or is that just "old people" talk about young people these days. How does one not live with their choices? This sounds like a different realm than the one I live in, or is that just your opinion? |

I've never hidden that fact, which is why -- now that Brucie's gone -- I limit my conversations to this forum.
Just because I don't windsurf doesn't mean I don't participate in other sports, both indoors and outdoors. I'm an avid sailor, for example. And I sometimes engage in certain indoor sports........ mentioned above. Avidly, too.

I watched our child go through school, primarily private school, and compared the curricula to public schools. I'm also on the school committee at a local regional school system, so I'm very familiar with how our governments -- fed and state -- tinker with and dumb down teaching requirements and how the various unions screw things up.
So I *do* have a perspective that's at the ground level, from the inside. I don't like what I see.
Living with their choices? Kids choose to misbehave and are then given a pass. I'm on the disciplinary subcommittee (part of the school committee) and listen first to the offenses these kids commit but then have to listen to the parents, clergy, and advocates plead that "he's a really good kid, give him another chance. We know he has a history of this, but he won't do it again."
Live with their choices? Kids are allowed to skip class, never learn a thing but are then graduated into society knowing almost nothing and contributing almost nothing -- living off the hard work and generosity of others.
Pure bullshit. Some of these kids should have their assess soundly smacked, maybe do some soft time, maybe do community service. Perhaps be conscripted into service. And parents should be made to pay time and $$$ for what their kids do. The crap would stop overnight.

I ski (moguls primarily), cross country skied, down hill biked, cross country bike, played squash, volleyball, raced rallies and off road.... sailing sail boats....excuse me while I yawn. Nothing even scratches the surface of the rush of windsurfing except maybe kiting.

Even if these kids get off with whatever they still cheat themselves and in the long run they will live with their choices. When I went through trade school I could have cheated my way through but did not and I am happy for it. The goobers who did cheat never amounted to much and were pretty useless electricians when it came down to it.
Hey and you better go back and edit your post. It's not nearly "PC" enough to have come from such an ardent liberal as yourself. Smacking children? What the? So what's holding back the punishment then? Why would you want to sit on a board of spineless enablers? Unless you want to enable the enablers, why bother? |

Ex-KKK white supremacist Frazier Glenn Miller was also involved in 1984 murder of Jewish talk show host

Quote: | WASHINGTON — Yelling “Heil Hitler” from the back of a police car shortly after he gunned down three people at Kansas City Jewish facilities, Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. left little room to doubt that the motive for Sunday’s deadly attack was anything but a hate crime.
The 73-year-old suspect, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan and white supremacist candidate for political office, has a long history of anti-Semitic violence and hate crimes, including involvement in at least one other murder. |
And again note the right wing encourages these haters by not kicking out all racists from their party vs having the confederate flag a symbol of the right wing. _________________ when good people stay silent the right wing are the only ones heard. |

Just because conservatives are compelled to toe the line with their rhetoric and talking points does not mean that liberals must also do the same. Liberals are smart enough and discriminating enough to analyze the situation and make up their own minds. (I.e., critical thinking, something lost on the right.)
I believe that we let some young people get away with effing murder (George Zimmermann, anybody?).
I have some views that are decidedly strict and others that are decidedly liberal.

You think "enablers," I think that we have a responsibility to help make things better. Yes, some kids deserve a spanking. ("Spare the rod and spoil the child.") But obviously, most don't. And young people need to learn ownership of their actions. Words and logic don't always work.
Some people prefer to stay outside the issues and make loud noise. Others enter the issues and constructively try to change things for the better.
Which are you?

So obviously you feel like what you are doing is making a difference, and that would mean they (students ) are learning some sort of lesson along the way or being reprimanded along the way. Those who don't will harm themselves unless they figure it for themselves, or pay the price for their actions.
Obviously by my description of what my experiences have been in the union I'm not one who just sits idle and watch things go to hell. That said, I would never have signed up for creating any sort of change there because pounding my head against the wall would have made more sense. |

So, no matter what or how I answer, you find something worthy of objection... even if you have to interpret my actions through your black/white optics so that you can contrive or imply outrage.
Sweet.
Oh, and by the way..... I, too, am in a union. And it actually helped me once, the right way.
If you care.

Echo all you say Pueno. (Always suspected what lurked beneath the surface. )
Suggest, RR, that you stifle your yawning and try some proper solo sea sailing. It's a different kind of reality! |
