Hey people!
I need to teach few of my friends to windsurf so I'm looking for inexpensive windsurfing board for beginners. Not older than 10 years old. Must have centerboard. Something like Mistral NTrance, Fanatic Viper, Bic Nova, Starboard GO, Start ...
I'm in Philly.
Thanks, _________________ Andrew

I don't think Calypso would be good for beginners - too narrow. _________________ Andrew

Bic Calypso at 320 x 65 cm and 175 liters is definitely too skinny for most adult beginners.
Something like a Bic Melody at 350 x 68 cm and 220 liters would be decent, though. Only a little less stable than a modern longboard like the Kona one. _________________ James' Blog: Windsurfing Equipment Size Calculator

Don't think you can go wrong with a Bic Nova.
I like Douglas' reference to a SUP. Why not kill two birds, pony up the extra cash for a stable Windsup. That way, it won't so quickly outlive it's usefuleness, you can teach windsurfing basics on it and still hit some SUP time.

1. All SUPs are expensive now. I don't want to spend $800-$1000 for teaching board.
2. From my experience board for teaching must have soft deck. After first scratch from non-skid most girls give up.
3. Exocet Kona would be nice but I don't see any around.
BTW: I have SUP with mast foot but I don't want beginners break it by dropping boom and mast on it every 5 seconds. _________________ Andrew

I think you're looking for the right board, but I never see them go cheap. They're always in demand. A Starboard Start doesn't lose value over the years the way freeride, bump and waveboards do. An 85 liter wave board you can find cheap. A beginner board that's actually good to teach on? At local swap meets on Long Island those boards all disappear in the first hour, and they going for $500-600.
Best luck to you, though! _________________ Michael

If you have sup with mast foot why not just bond eva foam to make it a soft top? That should give it enough protection. |
