PS to my last. Fishing is fantastic that time of year. Spi has a lot more to do than windsurf.... |

SEARCH the forum using padre or corpus as key words. Corpus/North Padre is a great place for beginners and novices with occasional stronger winds thrown in, with a small city and cheap lodging nearby. |

I go there because its very user friendly and fairly inexpensive. Other things to do besides windsurfing. I go in April but have friends that go in the fall and love it. Its kind of strange to be three miles off shore and see a group of windsurfers standing and talking in waist deep water. Windsurfing is alive and well in SPI. Lots of older folks but good people. Great fishing, SUP and some surfing on the ocean side. I lean towards SPI over Bird island because I bring my own gear. The first three miles or so of the island looks like Miami beach. With high rise condo's and lots of good eats. Drive a few miles and its nothing but sand dunes, bay and ocean as far as the eye can see. The best wind is at the flats where Jibber rents gear. Its a huge area only open to windsurfing and kites. Its well worth the 15 bucks a year to have that access. I stay at a friends condo on the bay with a private launch. A bit of a wind shadow for a bit but great once your out. If you truly are a beginner and have family with you, Phil Money's place is by far the most user friendly on SPI. Shade, wind protected on shore, a shower, rescue boat, kite lessons and sup rentals for the lite wind days. They also do ABK camps there. Bird island is also great and I'm pretty sure you can camp right there. |

Don't bother windsurfing in Baja - kiteboarding is where it's at. The winds are much lighter than the gorge and you'll get a lot more time on the water, and a lot better time (not slogging). And your gear takes a lot less room in your car (or you can fly with it easily).
I live in the gorge and mostly still windsurf here for a number of reasons (such as I love windsurfing!). But Baja is perfect for kiting, and La Ventana is perfect for learning to kite. I'm heading back tomorrow. |
