meeting with the coast guard guys and the nypd after i was picked up 5 miles offshore (yes i shoulda been smarter when onshore)
they told me -
1. wear a brighter color - NOT WHITE..as mentioned white caps foam etc.
2. SOLAS TAPE. make a cross on top of you helmet.
they said they can see that from the air more likely with that.
i put the cross on top and a few large pieces on the sides
as well as a few left over pieces on my PFD
pfd and helmet vastly improve survival.
i did find the tape needs to be replaced after about two years unless you really abuse your helmet..
plus they keep those nasty ole hotties on the beach from even considering to approach.. |

I prefer Trojan Brand for my lid. As for visibility, they make a glow-in-the-dark Trojan which can be charged up real bright after sitting on top of a lampshade. Just don't leave it up there too long. It might melt and then you lose all your protection. |

A white helmet stands out very well if you're up and sailing and not mysteriously lost at sea for some reason. |

Yep, good for finding you to shoot video (but so is your sail color), and
really bad if you're in the water.

I had a chrome finish water helmet made by ProTec that was highly visible. ProTec is now out of business, tho, and chrome paint from a spray can just doesn't work. The sun bounced off the helmet during the day as I imagined a beam from a flash light would at night. |

Good suggestion:

I ended up ordering a yellow helmet and the Tape for about $11: UST Reflective Tape, 8-Pieces (2 x 4-Inch)
I carry a strobe so if not disabled (shoulder separation, etc.) then I should be able to get that in my hydration pack with the UHF radio to call for help... but if separated from my gear when really windy, this on the top of my helmet would be helpful in spotting from the air.
I may try putting a few thin strips on the sides of the end of my boom arms if it sticks well....
