oh no more dysfunction coming out of the cold northeast.
you can't sail (too much ice), you can't kill the plovers, you can't the kill great whites (even though they can kill you), you can't park at CG after 8:30, and now you can't even drive your buddy's skid steer out on the flats!
What else is there to do on a cold winter's day?
Well, I would have liked the front footstrap inserts placed a little further forward and slightly closer to the center line. So I gained a touch by using the predrilled offsets. The only problem is that I'd have to really over-tighten them to prevent twisting, and man I hate twisting. So with the straps' back screws offset, a little bridge was made to lock both together. The result is absolutely rock solid. The weight -- about the same as some change in your pocket. Only top of the line, special forces grade, SS and AL components - hand picked at True Value were used.

That picture #2? I confess it was kinda staged.
My rubber fetish is more extensive than one of Patrick Robinson's Seal Teams.

I've made stainless steel bridges like that before to convert double rear straps to a single strap, but I put the bridge beneath the straps, flush against the deck and beveled so I couldn't trip or tear a bootie on it. Even just stepping on a normal footstrap screw head hurts; those exposed allen screw heads of yours are downright dangerous. At the very least use countersunk screws.

ron, you just dont want that kind shit exposed on the deck. i know you always sail in boots, but what about face/head exposure in some kind of weird digger/ or board flippin around in the water in big wind?

Upon close examination of the photos, let me correct what I wrote: | those exposed allen screw heads of yours are downright dangerous. At the very least use countersunk screws. |
I thought those nylok nuts were Allen bolt heads, and was really puzzled why you used them. I would do that very differently, for safety's sake.
Make a new bridge of the same dimensions.
Drill and tap it to accept four machine screws, say #10 or so, instead of the bigger holes you have now.
Slip the bridge under the straps, against the deck.
Mount the straps to the bridge, rather than vice versa.
Your toes and heel bones will love you for it.
Even more likely, 'cause it's what I always do, is to just crank my drill chuck setting up to 20, pull the trigger, let the clutch work its magic, and tighten the crap out of the #12 single mounting sheet metal screws. That stops the twist and hasn't damaged a screw hole yet out of the last 500 screws I've done that way.

Why not just add a couple inserts?

Well at least I woke up you all from hibernation.
Come on guys, after 30 years of sailing, give me some level of confidence that I know where my feet generally hang out.
If I didn't feel more than 1/2 way comfortable with it, it would have been aborted when Bruno Mars made his half time appearance.
I'm much more worried with how it's gonna sail.
I'll report back once the ice clears.
