It's physically impossible to sail at the true North Pole. Every direction from the Pole is south, the wind AT the Pole is thus always out of the south, and we can't sail directly upwind. We're stuck there. We'd have to swim south ... i.e., any direction ... a few feet first.

This presents an interesting (or not) dilemma. Say we're near the Pole on a reach towards the pole. As we cross it, WTF happens? Do we hit a headwind (see previous paragraph).

Smile

Maybe a planing tack would solve the problem. Very Happy

It is impossible to sail at any single point on earth. You would always be sailing away from that point.
You can sail toward or away from a point.

Have you not been watching all the news reports about the increase in ice, both N and S? They just had to rescue a ship from the ice in the Antarctic because it got frozen in place. Now this would not be odd, except that it is the middle of summer down there.

Also the quickest growth of ice in history in the Northern hemisphere FYI.

Have you not paid any attention to the response I gave you for your simplistic misunderstanding? Pay attention!

http://www.thelocal.se/20140119/temperatures-hit-41-in-swedish-cold-snap

An all time low temperature in Sweden today at -41 degrees f. In 1973, I swam in the Fjords of the arctic circle. Record low temperatures around the globe and the alarmists are still waving their hands.

November 2013 warmest on record worldwide. Trend or anomoly? Funny how the unusual cold attracts attention and the unusual warmth doesn't. Skeptic or denier? We could cherry pick data all day!
