Quote from a primary school female head;

'Boys are being taught how to behave like men at school to make up for lack of male role models at home. The growth of single parent families - most often without a father - means children are growing up without the steadying influence of a strong and caring man. Many end up with skewed view of life from television, and pornography.'

What I find ironic is that it is women, many with young boys of their own, who are now getting concerned at the 'skewing' of the relationship between the sexes, and the drive to marginalise men, and make them mere optional extras.

A rash of articles by women academics, over the last year, have all pointed out that womens lib has now become far removed from its original purpose.

As a mere male (an optional extra) lucky enough to have been raised with real male role models, I can only wonder if, perhaps, reality is dawning at last!

Naw, it is a direct result of plastics. Especially plastics like McCain's wife.

Oh, I forgot, you don't do science.

... or fermentation.

Except for the lesbians; they didn't choose their path ... except, of course, for those who did.

Once in a blue moon we actually NEED a lawyer, and maybe even a lawsuit, if simply hitting them over the head with the law and the facts of the case fails to clear their cobwebs.

And we actually need some lefties to offset the far right tighty whities. I always appreciated the constant small throng of disheveled anti-nuke demonstrators at the gates into an Air Force base where the government developed and stored all kinds of serious weapons. The demonstrators provided an ideological counterbalance to the necessary evil inside the gates. Similarly, we need mindless atheists to offset the mindless thumpers.

And who but legislators can write 70,000-page tax codes and even more confusing 10,000-page health care insurance laws and resulting regulations which even the FIRS, who must administrate both, doesn't understand?

Quote...'Similarly, we need mindless atheists to offset the mindless (bible) thumpers.'

An illuminating comment which speaks volumes about a mindset.

Those who are brought up in a predominantly religious society with all the conditioning and pressure to conform that such implies, yet who eventually reject (or grow out of) belief in a 'superbeing' modelled after their own species, can hardly be accused of mindlessness.

That surely applies to those who are unable to decide one way or the other! Atheists respect those who really do have faith enough to override logic, but not those who, through lack of certainty, just sit somewhere in between.

What is logic?

Until they cure cancer, hemorrhoids, and the common cold, I will have faith that there is greater meaning to life than my own personal gratification. Without God, there is no reason one shouldn't kill another person because he stepped on your foot.

Steven, that's just not true, and you know it.

Of course it's possible to have a logical contradiction, or impasse. Lewis Carrol (a mathematician and logician in real life) was fond of making up examples of such, for children, but that is not the issue.

My understanding and acceptance of logic prevents me from believing in a god (a human invention, or an assumption) yet I have a horror of killing any living creature. (Possible exception of confounded Scottish midges, and Arctic mosquitos!)

It isn't belief in a god that makes a person compassionate. I see no virtue in a person who doesn't kill only because he is afraid of being spanked by his god, and sent to the naughty room. (Hell - another ridiculous concept.)

I believe St. Pauls instruction - Faith, hope, and charity, and the GREATEST of these is charity. As an atheist, that rings my bell.

I am a simple man who believes that some spiritual voice gives us all an innate understanding between good and evil. It is not about burning in hell. We make our own hell or heaven here on earth.

However a universe without God seems depressing to me. It seems like we are all free to conjure up any matter of debauchery without consequence whether or not God exists.

All the other creatures that inhabit the earth think nothing of killing another animal and eating it. They don't worry about the mothers feeling when they kill its calf.

I felt bad when I ate the first animal I killed. I wondered about its spirit and so forth.

Existentialism was never my cup of tea.

We all need to find ourselves Steven, and listen to our inner voice. You believe life without a god would be depressing, yet some of us find the exact opposite. To that extent, we've both found a little meaning. (I take it we both disapprove of Pascals Wager - belief in god as an insurance policy in case he does exist.)

What I find depressing is some of those who 'find' god, then 'twist' things.I had a kayaking friend who fell into that trap. In all seriousness he one day claimed that while getting ready to go to church he lost a contact lens, but found it 'miraculously' balancing on a chair arm. This, he concluded was proof that god wanted him to go to church. i.e. God needed HIM, not the other way about!

How he could reconcile that belief with the death and destruction of a major earthquake (good, bad, and innocent young infants slaughtered when his god didn't see fit to intervene) I've no idea. Our friendship fizzled out!

I have no beef with the truly devout who act accordingly, and I sometimes wish I could have their faith. But as the Bard (any relation) said, we must be true unto ourselves.
