The detour around the closed highway takes about 30 minutes on a paved two lane road according to friends that took it 12/30/13.

I would thinking jumping on the free road at La Mision would be the logical detour.

It is, and even crossing the border at Tecate, is a fairly nice drive as compared to TJ or OM, it's the logical route. Unfortunately, everybody else will be doing the same thing, so the traffic on that route will be heaver than normal, trucks and buses included. A bit more patience will be required for awhile.

Crossing via Tecate and then onto US Route 94 adds an extra 30 minutes just on the US side , I can't imagine it's worthwhile unless there is a massive jam in Ensenada getting onto the free road to/from La Mision - which is entirely possible on a Sunday afternoon. Sounds like timing will be everything. At least we have a few months to let the locals work out the kinks in the detour before the carlos season starts.

I traveled that pass over a hundred times, and each time scratched my head regarding the engineering and safety. Some of the best memories of my life were on that road. Travelers please post up on conditions.
