|
|
Merry Christmas!
My buddy is looking for a beginner board and found an F2 Phoenix 340 for $100. It's missing two footstraps but otherwise looks like its in great shape. Is this a bad, fair or great price?
I'm telling him to go for it but wanted to check with you guys here. |

If it comes with a decent rig I'd go for it! |

the 100$ is based on condition, if it came with anything else be a bonus.
I would check and make sure the mast track is intact and useable , I DONT know what it has, some older had weird things, and to replace if so, may be a hassle/expensive, fin may be trim box, can find those still.
and if its suitable for his NEEDS it is INDEED A LONG board
I have some give away footstraps, that are worth that, ZERO, but useable
pretty sure I have 2 Exocet that match, pay postage _________________ K4 fins

No rig included, just the board. Does this make it over priced?

I thought the Phoenix had the modern mast track. I have a 320 version and it does. I'll make sure he checks it out.
You're right, it is a long board, but isn't that more appropriate than a short board for a beginner? I told him a board that size would be ideal for starting off on and he could also progress on it and keep it if he transitions to a short board later on. He is athletic, an avid sailor and a surfer.

Very generous, thanks I'll let him know!

Uh, oh. Many athletes, sailors, and surfers run for the hill in shame, defeat, and frustration when, after 15 minutes of windsurfing, they aren't planing through their jibes yet. To give him even half a shot, I suggest you impress upon him that WSing will be the toughest challenge he's ever faced ... but that's a GOOD thing because it keeps it interesting.

$100 is okay. Don't pay more.
The things to pay special attention to is the mast track / mast foot connection. Many of the old larger boards had proprietary foot systems. If so, if it doesn't come with that part or that part breaks, replacements are difficult to come by. If it will accept a standard chinook style twist on-base, you are fine.
Similarly, but less of an issue, are the footstraps. If they screw into an insert, they are easily replaceable. If not, they may not be easily replaceable. The good news is, for a first board, they are not essential. He will need to get the basics down and start using a harness before footstraps become important.
And depending on his weight you will want the board to be big enough that it will float him and provide some stability so he can uphaul. 130 liters minimum, 150 liters better. |
