The Al Gore effect, something that I've always liked; whenever there is a speech given by Al Gore, or whenever there is a global warming symposium of some kind or another, the weather turns foul, rain, snow, what have you. This often turns the event into something less than it was supposed to be due to bad weather.

The Al Gore effect strikes again.
By now most of you have heard about that big research vessel stuck in the ice in Antarctica, which is trying to be saved by a Chinese ice breaker trying to make its way to them for a rescue.
So what is the main reason for their research?
Global warming!
Love it!!!

And of course, the Koch's are opposed to climate research, no matter what the outcome. And the uninformed repeat their lies.

the trust fund kids Koch brothers are only the tip of the iceberg of the richest companies in the world, the oil companies. They are in the top 30 or so of the top 50.

Al Gores wealth is what; ANY one of these companies has in revenue in one day and yet the right wingers think the playing field is some how to the advantage of Gore.

We've just had a week of severe gales N.W., (quite common) coupled with successive heavy rainfall fronts (what's new) which have played havoc with the country.

Trees down, towns under water, cars floating down the main streets, and power lines down over large areas of the South East, so no electricity supply. Everybody is hopping mad with the government, and our creaking overloaded infrastructure. So far, only one politician has been daft enough to blame it on global warming, instead of lack of planning. (STILL building on flood plains, because we are running out of space with our ever growing population.)

Incidentally, our traditional market garden country town has old streets and buildings along the local beck, which regularly used to flood them out. (Old photo's and postcards.) But in 1976 we had a severe drought for most of the year, with crops failing, and everything turning brown, with a succession of 'climate experts' telling us that this was what would be in store for the next two hundred years!

A 'climate minister' was appointed by the then gover4nment who, amongst other things, exhorted the church to pray for rain. They did so to such effect that in september, the heavens opened, and half the country was once again flooded out. Laughing (And, to rub it in, York Minster was struck by lightning!)

Perhaps that's why us country folk, who daily live and work with nature, are so conservative and sceptical of 'experts.' What goes around...etc.

Do you have even the slightest inkling how a one-degree increase in the global temperature affects both the amount of moisture in the atmosphere (and where that moisture goes) and the amount of extra energy in the atmosphere (and what that energy does)?

C'mon, NW......... even kids who get a D- in high school physics can answer that one. Hell, even the NitWits who can spell "nitwit" can answer it.

Two weeks of temperatures in the high 60's in the Bay Area. Global warming? No, weather, just like the gales in Britain. GT--as a geologist you know better.

We don't need to study climate as much as prepare for change. Honestly, the solar max is more like a solar minimum right now. If this trend continues we'll all be frozen stiff.

PS, didn't Al Gore say that the northern passage would be ice free by now? It appears that both the N pole and S pole are experiencing much colder temps than previous decades, and the northern passage has gone back to normal.....if cold is normal.

Stevenbard--Al Gore being wrong doesn't prove a thing, and it is sad that you think so. What has happened is that a huge mass of heat, and CO2, has been absorbed into the oceans. This was anticipated to some extent in models, but not truly understood, particularly to the degree it has occurred. It means that the ecology of the oceans that I love will be changing for decades, if not centuries, with massive extinctions. It also means that the global heating impacts, while muted in the short term, will go on for centuries. Posted sources to that effect earlier--you might try reading from both sides of the paddleboard.

What drama Mac. The fish are smarter than you think. They will move to where the weather suits them.

Mac.

The storms and flooding we are currently experiencing have plenty of precedents, but are news because of our MODERN life style, and utter dependence on unfettered transport, and totally uninterrupted power supplies.

Nowadays, we plan on NO disruption to anything, be it roads, rail, sea, or more so than ever, flying off on winter hols. Gatwick airport suffered power failure (lines down in gales) and thousands were stranded in the airport. The planes were unable to fly for safety reasons. (Strong winds and flight control power problems.)

Floods are occurring in most places which have always been prone to such, though often at long intervals . and people just forget that! Power supplies are down because for years now, investment has been not forthcoming, and we are facing a power crises of failing distribution from avoidable storm damage, and lack of reserve supply (windmills all shut down in high winds) which has long been warned against. (As we sow, as they say.)

Countries which have more severe winter problems (Norway, Switzerland etc) have always coped, but we don't. To blame all this on global warming (because it neatly fits some computer predictions) is perverse, especially when I keep pointing out that we have experienced four severe winters on the trot which also neatly fit with solar cooling cycle and prediction, yet you airily dismiss as mere random weather, of no significance!

I repeat, our country is overpopulated, and still growing, has old infrastructure in need of modernisation, and government 'everything will be all right' attitude to coping with problems. THAT's what is happening hear and now!
