Thanks guys! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used 7.5+ no cams that will fit a 460 mast. My boom goes up to 223cm, hopefully something will work with that.

Besides the classifieds here, craigslist and Ebay, are there other good used sites I should keep an eye on?

And no I'm not related to the Thurston sails guy Laughing

Hi Thurston, As others have stated get something big! Find out how far out your booms will adjust and get the biggest sail you can that will rig on what you already have. I use a 7.5 more than any other sail here in Ct. for winds in the 10-20 kt. range. I find I can use the 7.5 when the wind is gusting into the very low 20's without much problem, then go to my 5.8

I have a 9.0 but hardly ever use it. The 7.5 is way easier to throw around, my favorite big sail!

Agree with everything others have stated. all good advice. Stay away from cams you don't need them, they can make learning more difficult.

Thanks Slinky, appreciate the advice. Are you out on the water this time of year? What do you use in terms of wetsuit/gloves/hood/booties?

I sail on LI which is not quite as close to you as CT but still pretty close - esp. temp. wise/

this time of year:
drysuit, 5 or 7 mil booties, neoprene balaclava under helmet, and then there is the whole glove thing. I've probably tried 8 or 9 different pairs of gloves/mittens. still haven't found quite the right setup for me. and I've (only) been doing this about 6 or 7 years.

do a forum search on gloves and mittens. there must be 1,000 pages of information and misinformation, opinion, etc. on this forum about gloves/mittens.

good luck!!

Hi Thurston,

I usually call it quits around Thanksgiving, but sometimes sail into December if the weather is mild. I have an O'Neil Oasis drysuit with hood, 4 mm. boots and Dakine mitts. I used to sail rear round here when I was in my 30's.

Thurston,
Congrats on the Phoenix. Great find.

Slinky,
My rear was rounder in my 30's too!

I'm in my 30s now so I think I'm dumb enough to still go out.

I have winter surfing gear, probably not ideal for being in the wind on a board, but I still spend enough time in the water off the board so it will probably work fine. 6/4 wetsuit with hood, 7mm booties and claw-mitts. I hate having to wear this stuff...

Tomorrow might be good Thurston. Water is still 48 and air will be mid 50's. South wind 10-15 with gusts to 20. No sun though.

You should be good with the gear you have. Anything to wear on your head?

That's what I was thinking, tomorrow looks decent. I'll have to cut out of work pretty early, gets dark so early now!

I have a hood on my wetsuit.

Just be sure to sail somewhere safe! Ninigret is a great spot, you may even find some company.
