Hi Folks,
Any tips on where to get a soft / powerful lightwind formula fin for less than bazillion dollars? I have a really wide tailed formula board and I'm having a hard time getting to initiate planing and rail up in light wind conditions with the stiff old fin that I have in it.

If you can more specific about fin, board, your size, your sails, perhaps we'd be in a better position to help.
Just order a 70cm stock fin from Rainbow/TrueAmes/Finworks, and it will be about 170 new.
Go on Cal Cup website. Lots of guys have multiple big fins that they don't use on their Formula boards.
I find a R-14 Deb62 works about the SAME as a F-4 62 for light winds, but strong winds is where the control difference comes in. |

Thanks Kevin and Zirtaeb,
I sent an email to the F4 folks. I'll also see what secondhand stuff there may be on the CalCup website.
I'm on the Gulf Coast of Florida, where 10 knots of wind is a good day. About half of my formula sailing is in conditions where I'm underpowered on an 11.0, and the vast majority is in less than 15 knots. I weigh 75 kg.
My board is a custom "Don's Lab" board that looks a lot like a Mike's Lab board. The tail is really wide; 87 cm wide even after I cut some wingers into it.

Despite the width, the board has relatively low volume in the tail, and has some double concaves and stuff behind the mast track that may make it slower to plane. Those factors might inhibit the planing a little, but I think the main thing is that the fin isn't lifty enough to get the wide board to "unwet".

You still didn't mention what fin you have and what size.
If you buy a G/10 fin, you can sand it down thinner for more top speed, as most G-10 70cm fins are too thick and draggy, great lift, for top speeds. |

the folks in SF bay have a different set of conditions that may be defined as "light wind." one cannot have a 62 cm fin that is both "controllable in high winds," yet soft and flexy to assist pumping to plane?
have discussed with douglas as to what he has: a chopped down 80 cm fin to 70cm, stiff as a MF because it was originally an 80.
plenty of used 70's around. douglas, shop in the SF area by asking which fins are most flexy and squirrelly in moderate conditions. molded with carbon vs G-10. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

All the CalCup racers have fins too big for their needs, so have lots to sell.
Just 6 years ago, most Formula guys all hadd 70cm fins, totally not useful around here.
Average sail here is a 10, needing a 62-66 fin, depending on size of the rider. |

Oh, someone once mentioned to me ... F-4.
If you want one in a month, it's $1,200.
In 6 months, $800.
In 12 months, $600. |
