Guy, I don't know you, but our paths have probably crossed on the
river many a time.

Even though this is Mitch's and Mike's show, I cannot resist comment on your questions,
because, well, I like intellectual discourse, and there are reasons for that.

GuyT wrote:
I always wondered what pushes a person to write almost compulsively on forums, because let's face it, it's very futile.

This is a great question, and hopefully, Mike will see the relevance, and answer it.
In my own case, it focuses my ideas, which can be handy, it
might provide some mirth, and in my opinion the world is a better place
with mirth, and the discourse might just impart some new knowledge,
or adjust an incomplete opinion. Why would that be a good thing?
Call me naive, but I think our race improves with more knowledge, and
more truth (and more laughs), and I think the system is self correcting
(though corrections can be very slow). For me there is also something
intrinsically enjoyable about good prose.

I myself am a forum addict and I am pretty ashamed of it. If I don't write much on IWindsurf (good for you!), it's because English is not something I master, but God knows how active I am on French windsurfing forums.

I would never have guessed that English was not your 1st language,
and I can only speak for myself when I say, I try not to do anything
of which I am ashamed. For me it causes inner turmoil, and I get more
than enough turmoil from external sources.

Well, I care, or I wouldn't ask the question, and I ask here because it is
a sea of information about windsurfing(some more competent, some less).
The thing is, after some discourse, here, you get to understand the
participants, and their strengths. In my case, I'm looking
for additional personal knowledge or a different perspective than my
own, if I'm ambivalent about an issue (or a board or sail). If I have a
strong opinion, I still like to think my mind is open to differences, which
might augment my opinion.

GuyT wrote:
And, let's face it my evaluation of my latest board has no interest, who's not going to say that it's the best board they ever had, after spending a grant and a half on it?

Well, if I'm lying to myself about a new board on which I just spent a
grand and a half, there's that inner turmoil thing I just don't need again,
and it's creating even more external turmoil for someone else if I
expound on a personal experience I'm really not having. I'm not
sure I understand why someone would indulge in this kind of behavior,
but I do see more than a bit of it. The motivation to behave this
way is a mystery to me.

Every once in a while, I write a good topic and get positive feedback from people. Most of the time, it had humor in it and managed to put a smile on a few people for a couple of seconds. But is it worth the incredible waist of time I spend in front of a computer?

So you've added to the joy and/or the knowledge. I don't see that as
a waste. If you'd rather be doing something else, by all means, do
something else.

GuyT wrote:
So the question is, why do I have this compulsive need to write on forums?

This, you can only answer for yourself. I doubt even Mike would want to
give a commanding answer. But my simple answer for myself is
because I enjoy it. The reasons I "enjoy" it, I may have touched on above,
but motivation (for me) is a fairly lengthy subject, and we'll need to sit
down with more than a few beers to broach that.

p.s. There is also a little narcissism in it for me, but that is another story.

alf on it?

I come here from time to time to get FIRST HAND experience with a set piece of equipment. BUT before I do, have already done a lot of online research, I've read the reviews, and probably talked to some shop personnel. But NOTHNG beats an unbiased first hand experience. That being said, I really don't care for people offering opinions based on what they read, or heard, or anything else cause that isn't First Hand experience which to me means didly squat.

I would like to think I'm not the only one who thinks this way.... Shocked

Ok, you want a first hand experience, here's mine with a Quad board.

Tried one in Arenal in 2012. It was a Fanatic Quad in the 85 liters range, hated it. The Board couldn't go upwind, was slow, never seamed comfortable.

Well, the other day, I was on a river bigger than yours Twisted Evil , but rarely windy Sad .

I was on 7.4 meter sail, 125 liters board and huge fin to be able to go upwind, the current being the same direction as the wind. There was another guy on a Fanatic Quad 76 liters and on a 5.2. Granted, he is smaller than I, but boy could he play the Quad: the guy was as fast as I and was actually doing a better job at going upwind.

So, based on my first hand experience, my opinion on quads is crap.

What I am trying to say is that, unless I know the person and can relate, I take an opinion on a forum about a board or sail very lightly and prefer to rely on reviews in magazines. Again, we are lucky on that matter: in Montreal, we get all the windsurfing mags from U.K. and France Twisted Evil . Too bad we don't get much wind. Crying or Very sad

What???? "Unless I know the person...." you take an opinion very lightly, yet do you personally know the testers on the magazines? Some of the people on this forum have been testers on magazines..... Sorry Guy, that was just too funny and obvious to pass up.....

What I am saying, if you get a first hand report, you can then ASK questions from that person (try that from a magazine). Such as what other boards to you like, where to you sail, what style of sailing are you into, etc. Then you can take his/her eval and cross compare YOUR likes, location, and style. THEN the review has meaning... To you.....

Your comment is just enforcing my point, my opinion is crap.

If someone wants me add a certain credibility to their comments, they should start their topic by giving me some background on them, like the guy from that Fender guitar review.

Actually I would trust your opinion. With the understanding that you like bigger sails and weed fins Smile

By the way, I love my new Makani Wave Weed fins:

Tried one at the Hatch this summer, just flew across the patch of weeds that mysteriously stay still right in the middle of the river, never attracted a single straw.

The beauty of that particular weed fin is that it doesn't look like a weed fin, so now, nobody freaks out at the Hatch when I put a weed fin!

For the big sail thing, I would like to remind you that I used to weight 192 pounds and my brain hasn't adjusted yet to the fact that I lost 30 pounds.

Hey I used to weigh 191 and now I'm 185! I know it sounds lame compared to the 30lbs you lost (congrats).

Yeah I have the Nano for my 115l Naish Freestyle board when I go to SPI. It rocks! Even on a freestyle board (although I don't do any aerial freestyle on that board) that fin rocks.

It turns out I do know GuyT (and he knows me). Just didn't know how
his written name was pronounced.
