Good ideas Bard but I think the teacher could register his gun also.
Steve made some good points here about car registrations. This is another dangerous bit of tech that kills about the same number of people in the US.
Widely used in crimes ,and causes many accidental deaths.
The basis for registering them both seems similar.
The main difference is that the Mob and the NRA don't want guns registered.

EXCLUSIVE: 51 Upcoming Gun Shows Ban Loaded Weapons To Promote ‘A Safe Environment’

Quote
If “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” as the NRA proclaimed in its post-Newtown press conference, why do so many gun shows prohibit attendees from carrying loaded firearms?

According to a ThinkProgress analysis, 51 gun shows in January ban attendees from bringing loaded guns onto the premises. In addition, ThinkProgress was unable to identify a single gun show this month that explicitly allowed people, even those with concealed-carry permits, to bring a loaded weapon with them.

For every event, their stated rationale for not permitting loaded weapons in the gun show was simple: safety. Crossroads Gun Show, a touring event across the western United States, explained on their website:

Q: Can I carry a loaded gun in the gun show? I have a Concealed Carry Permit.

A: We respectfully request that you do not bring any loaded firearm into the gun show. Safety is our Number One Priority, and a safe environment in the show can only be maintained if there are no loaded guns in the show.

At most shows, if an attendee brings a personal firearm, he or she must check it at the door and use a tie “so that they cannot be operated, be breached or loaded.”

Some events, like Bill Goodman’s Gun & Knife Shows across Ohio and Tennessee, even threaten prosecution for those who try to enter with a loaded weapon. “Patrons who bring loaded magazines or weapons into the show will be refused entry and may be subject to prosecution,” their website reads.

Guns are a serious business. Our founding fathers were serious guys who understood personal responsibility. There is very little of this left today.[/quote]

Are these those same founding fathers that thought slavery and burning witches was a good idea?

Stevenbard.

What you are asking for is not possible in today's system for the treatment of the mentally ill. The "Joker" theatre shooter in Colorado could not be held because there was no facility to take him since he was not threatening enough to meet the criteria for lockup. Involuntary holds are a process.

If you think that a doctor will "certify" someone who once exhibited vIolent behavior or mental illness as "gun worthy" you are crazy! BTW ADHD, dsylexia, depression, even one episode of heavy drinking are all coded mental illnesses. Folks around here will not seek treatment if they will lose their ability to hunt because they may need to surrender their guns.

I find it ironic that the same politicians that constantly cut funding for the mentally ill are first to blame our gun woes on them. We have a new health plan that finally provides parity to mental illness and these guys want to shut down government in a political stunt to repeal it. Their cries of blame on the mentally ill ring hollow to me.

NW ...in an effort to divert away from guns, you brought up the issue of violent video games...ironically the same day DRUDGE ran a huge article about how the DC killer was a vid freak. The other day, Grand Theft Auto came out and sold $800,000,000 of product in ONE day. I will ask you again, since you brought the idea up, what do you propose we do to fix it?

Cars are registered so they/we can be taxed.

Don't forget that vehicle registration also involves emissions control testing, at least in California. A smog test and certification is required every other year for vehicles over 5 years old. Vehicles 1974 and older are exempt. Vehicles that don't pass an emission test require repair to meet compliance. If repair costs exceed a certain amount, the owner can operate the vehicle for a limited period of time, after which it can no longer be on the road.

We are doing a better job protecting the homeland from international terrorists, than we are from domestic terrorists.

Really? Do the cops know that?
.the cops I lived with in my youth used those registrations and tags to fight crime. First thing they did was ask witnesses about tag numbers at the scene and go to those homes ~ and there the guy would be.
If they have the gun without a registration then the NRA wins and the dead victim loses.
