noshuzbluz brought up this downhaul knot in another thread and it`s such an awesome knot I wanted to give it it`s own topic so it`s easily searchable and not lost in the other thread.

Here`s a video of the way it was taught in an ABK camp 20 years ago. Same knot tied a different way.

Yes very simple and awesome knot indeed! And obviously don't need to use your uni for it. I've used everything handy from a screwdriver to a stick for a handle and it takes about 1 second to do. yvanboniec would love this!

An even easier method, IMO: I just use a downhaul cleat. I use long downhaul lines for easy, tension-free threading, and moving the cleat on the line as more line emerges from the pulley is much simpler than moving a knot. My cups also have volcano pads on them after I lost a season to a broken toe from a bare uni, so I'd have to remove and reinstall the pad each time if I were using the cup as a handle. The cleat is always right where I rig, so there's nothing to remember or fetch.

I'll have to disagree with you Mike, I know, I know, people usually don't disagree with you but the beauty of the knot is it's one less piece of gear you have to search for and account for.
I use the uni cup and usually don't have to pull it twice.
I've even shown the trick to a couple of old timers to their amazement.

An ABK instructor showed me that awhile back. Used to think it was awesome till I tried the rigging winch. I always attach it to the mast extension when taking it out of the car so no problems for me!

I like using a cleat, and I keep a crank in the van as well (in case I'm rigging a big sail and want the tuning finesse that a crank provides.) But this knot trick is GENIUS for adjusting downhaul on the beach. Love it! And just stuck both videos on my blog.

I like my cleat, but it is good to know this in case I lose it.

That's what's so great about opinions: they're just OPINIONS, not rules.

Sometimes I feel like a sucker for shelling out $50 for a downhaul winch but it does work well in that one can easily see and watch the effects of downhaul on the sail. I think the winch is especially great for those new to the sport. The knot trick is a great thing to have in the back pocket however.

I do not feel like a sucker for owning a winch (and a cleat) and I like the knot trick too. For fine tuning a sail nothing matches a winch. Once you have owned a sail for awhile and have the tuning figured out, you can then use a cleat (or the knot) to get you where you need to be. For a big race sail I would still use the winch.
