It apperas that 1231, 1233, and 1235 N. Point Drive are all vacant. We need to minimize our impact on the residents who live near the launch and rigging area, so please park your cars in front of 1231 and 1233, and also access the rigging area b/w 1233 and 1235 N. Point Drive. These are two vacant buildings. We should not be parking and rigging our gear near occupied buildings or else we are going to lose our access to the boat ramp launch.
There is a map here:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105045082424443100566.0004670e723d4cfacb1a7&ll=37.829853,-122.371581&spn=0.010474,0.022745&t=h&z=16
Also, please drive extra slowly through the neighborhood. There are lots of kids at play, and we do not want to give the current residents any reason to complain about us. _________________ Kevin Kan

Kevin,
How many cars can park for those three vacant buildings? Seems pretty limited. If those spots fill up, is the alternative to drop you gear off and then park at the end of the dirt road? |

I hope everyone will chill a little bit and take advantage of this. A few things to keep in mind: first, the land is still under the control of the military, and we don't have any strong claim of use rights until it transfers to the city. Second, for a change, the Navy is trying to work with us, and the city is cooperating, as they said they would when they asked us not to slow down the clean-up. Third, there is physical access--there are grassy areas where you can drop your gear for rigging and launching at the ramp. If you are willing to rig your gear and then move your car, there is a lot of parking within walking distance.
If we antagonize the residents, who pay rent to the City, they could have the Navy seal up the fence lines, or enforce parking restrictions. So please, realize that we can be there as well-behaving guests, perhaps years before we would otherwise have legal rights to use it for access. This is one of the best windsurfing places in the country, and even if access isn't as good as it used to be, it is back! |

I imagine that there's not being any major change to this situation, is that correct?
I scouted the area yesterday AM, but didn't find any easier/more comfortable access.
Any new issue to be aware of?
Thanks. |

No news is good news! At a past (April I think) Navy community meeting, the Navy rep. did not deny the possibility (typical cagy government double negative) of demolishing the buildings in the area where we launch. They would only do this if they needed to get to contamination located under the foundations (much of the area behind the buildings has already been excavated).
So the parking and rigging will stay as-is and, yes, leaves much to be desired. Once on the water the launch is unmatched.

Thank you Tomg for the feedback.
Need to drag my lazy, middle-aged ass over there. Will try to do it when there's people and learn from the (more) locals |

Yes the City of SF has a pretty redevelopment plan for the Island. SFBA commented on the environmental documents to ensure access out at the north east side (location of current launch). But I think the pace of Navy base closure/transfer is a reflection of the real estate market and economy. in other words if there was strong pressure to redevelop, the transfer would kick into high gear. And I thought we might see a shift when recently Governor Brown made a trip to China and there was a story in the Chron about the Chinese Railroad authority backing the redevelopment. Apparently that fell through.
My concern is keeping some sort of access to the cove during [years of] construction, not necessarily the finished product (which is shown as a park in the renderings). Because if they started today, like many of my TI sailing friends, I
will be long retired from the sport by the time it's finished! |
