Yes, I remember tie on booms. What a joke. I used them in 1988. Throw that thing away and get a clamp on boom before you destroy your mast. GeeWizz...you can buy a used modern clamp on for $26 at Windance.

Don't hate the equipement of the time.
If you could sail nearly as well as RobbyNaish did in 1986, you would be the best windsurfer in your country.
Plenty of windsurfers used tie on booms until their skills got to pro level.

I'll never forget the transition from tie on to clamp on. I got pretty good at a tight tie on boom that came with my Wayler board. But progressed past that board and into newer gear and then got my wife at that time working for Fleetwood. (You old bay area, Delta Mossbacks will remember the name) and didn't worry about alum. and carbon booms or bases for a decade or better. Going from the tie-on to the clamp-on was like manual to power steering.

Yeah, we got some Fleetwood prototypes late in '85, and it seemed the future, although the extra weight was noticeable, and still is.
By then, the serviceablility of the newest tie on booms were working very well, with little boom twist, and very few crushed masts if instructions and line diameter was maintained, along with a nice shim, of course.
That pic, WH front end, has 3 little "cleat" bumps between two holes. That's where the final underlap of inhaul line goes across.

I also would recommend buying a newer clamp-on boom. You will smile at the simplicity.

That's the understatement of the decade. You will curse that boom, windsurfing in general, and your pitiful existence on earth every damned time you try to use that miserable caveman relic. And given your strength, you will probably crush your mast trying to get it tight.

BTW ... ever visit this website?

BTW ... I still have a Fleetwood boom somewhere in my barn. Loved its simple, non-line-wearing cleat.

Can you post a non-blurry close-up view of the boom head? I think yours might actually be an evolutionary missing link between a tie-on boom and a clamp-on boom, in which case you just need to figure out where to thread and cleat the lines.

If it's just a regular tie-on boom, one of the tricks is to tie it moderately tight with the boom lying alongside the mast, then when you swing the boom up so you can tie on the clew end it will pinch the attachment to the mast tighter.

I still use my tie-on for very light wind. It is so light (and flexible) compared to modern booms.

For more intensive use, it's a bad idea to try to rescue a tie-on. If you want to use it in higher wind, you will want to tighten the knot and you will crush your mast... The flexibility also leads to instability in the sail.

That pic, the inhaul used two knots, one starting, one ending slipping over the open hook in the front end.

Thank you that was very helpful! Any idea on the dimensions of the rope? What do you mean by attaching the excess rope to the clew? Is there anyway to make it tighter?
