today was a nice day back at candlestick. except the entire time i was on the water i was thinking about how disgusting it was that we are sailing in a toxic cesspool.

the recology plant emits incredibly disgusting odor, as of you who were there today can attest, and also no doubt discharges contaminants into the water (i have pictures of trash being blown or irrigated into the bay).

in addition we have the brisbane dirt mounds between 101 and bayshore that have huge clouds of dust flying around. this dust is the byproduct of mining operations which means it apparently has very sharp microscopic edges rendering it particularly toxic. who knows what this dust really is, could be asbestos for all we know.

now for something really shocking, recology has currently submitted plans to quadruple the size of this trash facility. not only is it currently a huge building creating noxious odor and a wind shadow, but if expanded it will obviously process 4x or more trash and take up 4x more wind. they claim it will be completely self-contained and have no odor. they claimed that the current facility would not have odor either. if they have garbage trucks transporting garbage then by definition it is not completely contained.

at the same time, the redevelopment of candlestick park/point calls for water access/beach improvements. what kind of investment would anyone want to make to build a nice beach downwind of a 1 million square foot garbage treatment plant?

brisbane city council is motivated to allow the recology facility because they will get huge fees from the processing. they estimate they will receive $3 million per year in assessments against recology based on expected amounts of trash to process.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

there are three things we can immediately do to put people on notice. each and every time you go to candlestick and witness the odor from recology, trash strewn about downwind of recology, or dust blowing from those mounds, there are three phone numbers you can and should call. and i mean everyone should do this individually to let people know this is serious.

#1

the first number is the bay area air quality management complaint line. they actually send a field representative to verify that complaint. the phone number is:

1-800-334-ODOR (6367)

for more information, the page with more info is here:

http://www.baaqmd.gov/Divisions/Compliance-and-Enforcement/Air-Pollution-Complaints/General-Air-Pollution-Complaints.aspx

#2

the second number to call is the city manager of brisbane, in which the dirt mounds are located and in which the recology expansion is planned to take place. the number is:

Clay Holstine, City Manager: (415) 508-2110

for more information, the page with more info is here:

http://www.ci.brisbane.ca.us/departments/administration/city-manager

#3

the final number to call is the san francisco bay conversation and development commission (bcdc). among other things, bcdc grants permits for "new development within the first 100 feet inland from the Bay." the new baylands development project in brisbane falls within their jurisdiction. the number is:

Adrienne Klein, Chief of Enforcement (415) 352-3609

for more information, the pages with more info are here:

http://www.bcdc.ca.gov/staff_roster.shtml
http://www.bcdc.ca.gov/permits/faqs.shtml

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

put these numbers in your phone and make the call every time you go to candlestick!

it is quick, easy, anonymous, and let's people who should know that this what has been constructed and what is being planned is unacceptable.

I thought the smell and dust was part of the unique "character" of the Stick.

indeed it is! though regardless of whether someone is a candlestick sailor, the precedent for respecting this "endangered resource" is important for all other sites.

here is a picture of the dirt mounds, btw. the regulation is 25' in height. the problem is brisbane never recorded the base elevation when they issued the permit. they have yet to do anything about the increasing height, which is quite obvious to everyone. if you think think they've done anything to inspect the type of dirt or safety of dust that is discharged into the air...

here is a link to the full size picture:
