I just turned 50, never sailed or windsurfed, this summer (2013) bought a super heavy Obrien 12' 1" board with one pc fiber glass 15ft mast, 6.0 junky sail. Only$60 total, all in exc cond. Was up and going well by my 4th time. I'm athletic though. But i got my 52 yr old sister up and sailing on it also her first time in light winds. Don't underestimate old 90's equipment.
$45/hr rent new equip, purchase new equip for $500 - $750. Hence probably won't start windsurfing.
Or...............buy super old cheap stuff and go out, learn, struggle, get sun, wind, and water, and have a lot of fun.

I started windsurfing at around 51. Now, I have a big van that can only hold about 1/3 of all my equipment and can't wait to get out every day I can.

It's an addiction!! don't know if you've gotten planning yet, but when you do it opens a whole new world of fun.

welcome to the world of wsing!

Maybe learning on challenging gear teaches you to make do with what you have. Does the newer stuff make it too easy?

I see people spend more time fooling around with their equipment, trying to find some magic combination than they do sailing. Same day, same beach, others put up one rig and stay on it for hours.
