Hey, that was my other idea! Any electrician will tell you that a generator and a motor are essentially the same thing, just wired differently. The Powerball winner can buy that land and hire some electricians to re-wire them into fans! Wind every day! WooHoo!

actually a generator and a motor are exactly the same thing.

taking one of those windmills as an example, turning the blades (which the wind does) turns a coil of wire inside a magnetic field which produces a current in the coil - generator

but, if you were to provide an electric current to the coil, then the blades would turn - electric motor.

it's a little something called electromagnetic induction. a speaker and a microphone have a similar relationship. provide a current, you have a speaker. speaking into the cone induces a current and you have a microphone.

sorry for geeking out, but it's something everybody in the world needs to understand since everything we have depends on electricity in some way and I guess I'm still suffering withdrawal from the end of the school year!

I'm a 100% behind what airwave is saying.

I drove up to SI on the 5th and sailed Powerlines in the late afternoon. On Saturday the 6th, the wind was a bit too much from a northerly direction and Powerlines wasn't working worth a damn, so I sailed at The Access. On both days I used the same sail and board, so it really came down to the direction of the wind. Regarding the wind turbines, they are constantly moving them to optimize the wind and its direction. So, on the upside, you can use the wind turbines to help you decide which site on SI is best.

With that all said, I had a day last summer where you couldn't really plane on a 6.5 at either Powerlines or The Access, but The Sign was ripping 5.0 conditions. I don't know what was going on that day, but I can say that I wasn't complaining.

I rigged a 5.75 and sailed my old Mike's Lab 8'10" slalom board with a 34cm Tectonics Goldwing. It was great to finally get a day at Powerlines. In all my trips up to SI last year, there wasn't a single day where Powerlines was good. Yet, I still really like camping at Powerlines. Fortunately, The Access is just a short drive down the road.
