That's how I learned! Hopefully the campers will inspire their parents.

Dennis, I love that " new ad" from Bic! I wonder how old it is? Early to mid 80's is my guess. And to think that Bic was based in my hometown of Hamden Ct. at 1070 Sherman Ave. about 1.5 miles from my home. Sherman Ave was a manufacturing, industrial zoning area. I'm guessing that they actually did manufacture the boards there. Corporate headquarters was in Milford Ct. Thanks for the memories.
Windsurfing has gotten so much easier to learn now than then with the wide boards. That looks like a Dufour Wing in the ad? My new Windsup at 85 cm. is so much easier to sail than any of those early boards. Everyone still seems to think windsurfing is really hard to learn. Such a shame.
It would be nice to see windsurfing become more popular. I'm about the only one left here in Old Saybrook. Would be a welcome change to sail with someone else.
How much more would it cost the manufacturers to put a mast track in the paddleboards? When the wind starts blowing above 10 or so it makes it hard to paddle, especially if you have to paddle against the wind.. Maybe more people would try it. There are certainly lots of SUPers out there. I see 'em mostly on days where there is no wind and glassy conditions

FWIW, death of WINDSURFING magazine was the culmination of a lot of things, but being at the crossroads of two struggling industries (print + windsurfing) is most certainly the lot of them.
In retrospect, I'm honestly unsure there were many things I could have done differently to keep that mag alive in it's then-current business model. (rather, then-old-school business model.
I just moved to Europe. Haven't made it to the lake. Will report.

re: bic ad
here's the current problem with windsurfing as I see it
it's got the wrong name!! haha
In that Bic ad, the copy says that the fastest growing sport in the world is sailboarding, not windsurfing. also, it states that it can be done in as little as 2 knots of wind!
so, all we need to do is go back to sailing on long boards in light wind (in addition to the higher wind, shortboard stuff) and change the name back to sailboarding, and all will be good again!!
edit: oh, and also figure out some way to bring the cost of boards back down to a reasonable amount. close to 2500 bucks for a board? too much in my estimation.
how's that for a solution?

here in Colorado we do have some youngsters coming up. mostly its the olde GUYS rule at the lake.
at months end I will 'try' to teach my 11YO neighbor Sara to become romanced by the wind and find the spiritual side .
Iam certain you can purchase a 2500$ board, but its not whats needed to learn on, and hardly whats needed by anyone.
Philip Köster ,PWA sailor of 2012 is the VW advertisement guy.
Shows what media will do for a sport, most anyone can name a NY Yankees player, but a absolute world class windsurfer.......
