We also have a Starsufer and it can be attached to the bottom of the board. This is even better than using the mast foot. I use a weight (a taped hockey puck) about a meter away from the attachment point to help clearing the fin. A sinking rope would be even better. What do you use? |

Heavy Marine grade nylon rope. You can probably get it at West Marine.
We used to attach it to the mast foot & run it through the centerboard. The Starts have special leash attachments while the Rio's & Kailua's have rear carry straps that I use.

I with some advise, made a couple decisions, got a small fin for the formula board, even it if the F doesn't work overall it could be of some help
Thinking about the centerboard , I started installation on the old BIC, it will be removable but but retractable, and having a fin made that is fairly short yet a lot of area for it.
My other thoughts , and again advise is to use tiny fins in the rear . Not sure how far we will get, but bound to have some fun , will update with a photo or 2 .
coachg , Thanks it will be interesting _________________ K4 fins

Yes, use tiny fins in the rear. When used with a much larger centerboard or centerfin, this gets the board CLR (center of lateral resistance) very close to the centerboard itself. Your kid will then be able to move the small sail COE either forward or backward of the CLR, to turn downwind or upwind.
BTW, I think you have a longboard. Use it for you kid. It will be more than stable enough and will be fast!
3 years ago, I was teaching my daughter, then 10YO on my longboard. My friend's son also 10YO was already good by himself on a Starboard Start barge. When I let go my daughter, the little guy decided to drag race her. Although she was turning slower, she was maybe 3 times faster on a straight line. The boy was so angered that he dropped his rig, swam to shore and decided not to sail anymore...
In my experience, a longboard is the best tool to teach kids. The good glide is a reward for them and it's addictive. For adults, a large barge maybe needed for it's stability at the very beginning |

Thanks
I now have 3 serious options for teaching, if I could only learn myself
This is my newest creation //discovery, a Presto122L by BIC, came over on the Mayflower. Addition of center fin , which will be 15.25cm long, removable, not retractable, of couse 2+1//thruster configuration.
Sailed this today in FORCE .225 , maybe 12 gusts, I am so impressed
used a small 4.2m just to get the feel. . Think I paid 35$ for board, fins slightly more
not sure if this qualifies as a QUAD or not......

Cool board!
Don't forget that testing with a 4.2 a board that will be used with a 2.0 is similar to testing with a 9.0 a 80l board! My guess is that your board will require your largest fin up front with a single small fin in the back in order to be tacked with a 2.0 or 2.5. Let us know!
Anyway, I guess you will both have fun on the board. |

thanks. the 4.2 was for me , enough to sail without being too big.
we have a 2 a 2.5 and a Micro freak 3.2m on a wonderful 310 carbon, 85% mast .
The large fin in the center will be a 15.5cm, largest I want to fit in the box, it is a big fin with a lot of area.
the rear center is home made//cut down and 14.5
the sides I can do 9cm K4s, or up to on the sides I am thinking some sides (even small ones) will aide in upwind and some stability for a little gal.
I will update some photo/essay on this thread.
I don't get much excited about my inventions, but this worked without a glitch and sailed very nice , keeping in mind what it is. _________________ K4 fins

did a few different set up for the little 10yo girl,
very small sidebites, like 9cm, the 14.cm rear center, and centerboard of at least 13cm worked for her. On the same set up I needed larger sides, the centerboard similar. For me it really worked best with a single rear, but didn't play with it much.
As a learning platform my olde longboard worked best, and Sarah did best with a 3.2m HotSails MICRO Freak. The Formula may have worked but didn't get it sorted with a small fin _________________ K4 fins

Nice! Wish you could do surgery on my Bic 10'6 windsup, needs a centerfin box too for teaching my daughter. |
