I did a little google search for you and come up with a reference to the pan am games on Barry Spanier's Maui Sails blog. The blog has the story of maui sails which is really the story of evolution in windsurfing tech. Its a cool read. I'd definitely say Barry is your man. Based on the blog it looks like he would enjoy the reminisce.
Why don't you post a couple of your pics from maui in 81. As a kid who learned the sport in 85 and dreamed of maui I'd like to see what maui was like back in the day.

Would love to see those!
Started sailing in 1984 and remember the PanAms from earlier VHS (and picture books! Remember those?), but wouldn't be able to call out a year. My first clear memories go to the first Aloha Classic.
I sure didn't start on the latest gear available, yet (Neil Pryde's) RAF sails seem to have emerged a bit later though, no? |

The years haven't gone by as quick as it seems!!
1983 is only 30 years ago.
Sorry can't help otherwise, I started 'only' about 22 years ago.
+2 on the picts of Maui, especially of the island. |

I started fall of '83, and remember photo's of Naish with an orange 12' PanAm board taken during that summer.
Also he used a board of that color for the 1984 Oneill Classic race.
If I recall correctly, by '85, he was using a white custom Naish course board. |

There were definitely Pan Am Cups in Kaliua in 1981, 1982 and 1983. Looking at some old pictures from what I believe was the 1983 Pan Am Cup, Bay Area attendees were Bard Chrisman, Steve Willrich, Don Yokam and me. I was also at the 1981 Kailua event racing fully battened Pineapple sails.
