Hey there - couple questions for all you experts...

I'm a novice windsurfer...have been windsurfing very casually on the lakes of NH for the last 5 years on ancient 1980's equipment. I recently picked up an old Bic Astro Rock with 3 nice Neil Pryde sails (6.0, 7.5, 8.8m) for free. The fin is beaten up and I need a new one...it is a trim box fin, and it sounds like I should get something around 35cm's. I plan to sail on the ocean instead of the lakes.

My question --- does anyone have some cheaper used trim box fins available? I've found a few, but they're not cheap ($70 each plus shipping)...and so I'm wondering if I'm better off just spending $200 or so on a newer old board...?

Are you SURE it's an AstroRock with a trim box?
70 is cheaper than the alternative, and AR's were 24" wide, so easy to balance, learn to heli tack, and planing jibes.

Thanks for the response. I am sure it is the trim box, little black plastic squares that I can move around, etc. it is the same model year that is pictured for sale here: http://www.windpowerwindsurfing.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10_23_85&products_id=4283

I do need to learn all of those things, and so if this is the right board to do it on maybe I should just throw down for a fin. Once concern that I have is whether or not my sails are of the appropriate vintage for this board, as I've read that it won't work well with newer style of sails. I'll try to investigate the year of my sails. I sailed it once and was having a hard time getting to the back of the board...but my skill level may have been to blame instead of the sail...

Since you got all of this stuff for free, have the fin box in the Astro Rock replaced with a power box. Any board repair shop can do this. It will cost under $200 and then you will have a nice board that can use modern readily available fins. A win win.....

Maybe the board isn't worth investing any money into.
What is the condition of the board?

if you could purchase a $200 that has a good fin , you very well may be better off.

Trim box fins are getting scarce, but you should inquire at some of the FIN companies, and WINDsurf stores to see what they have

$70 for a NEW fin is rather conservative.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Finworks-1998-Wave-Trim-34cm-Trim-Fin-Trim-Fins-/360672656153?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53f9c3fb19

I would look at paying $30 + shipping for a good condition used fin.

True Ames may have a new one.

USED try both these, either email or phone:

WINDANCE in Hood River & RIDE in Hatteras.

I know I have one that I 'could' part with, if your search doesnt work PM me off my profile.

The right fin IS a True Ames, so they did make these.

The left is a FIN WORKS, probably weed fin, its a little short for you, only 29.5cm, its poly, not G10. $22.50 + ship

I would suggest 2 other places to try::

2nd Wind in Hood River

&

they had some last fall for sure

Larsons Ski and Sport in DENVER

Trim box fins go up on EBay periodically, I think they go pretty cheap because there are few takers. dhmark

I have a large racing-style fin in excellent condition you can have for free if you'll pay for shipping. At work so can't take a picture right now, e-mail me via my website below if interested.

That board's OK for learning, but don't put a penny into it, it's worth $20. at a swap. To spend $200. to have a powerbox set into it would be utter foolishness, can't believe someone would suggest it. When you outgrow it, save your pennies and find a good modern board, something less than 10 years old, less than 5 if possible.
