Anyone know where they newly located the wind measuring devices at Stevenson?
I have notice that the actual wind speeds on the water are now far below what is indicated on iWindsurf... |

Odd. I assumed the sensor data would read low by the amount of the current. Good to know before I drive 170 miles before dawn for it. |

Hmm for 15 years I have noticed the Stevenson gauge reads high till the mid 20's. I've been there when it read 20 and 6.0 was too small... |

No surprise. I can't sail a 6.2 until Arlington's sensor is in the low 20s. (The Hatch is a different story altogether.) |

It's a conspiracy to get people to leave Hood River and come to Stevenson where we have the most windy days. |

Soon the "Loonie's" will be washing up on the banks of Stevenson in droves - that is the conspirancy... |

Has the sensor really been moved?
From my experience, every site has its own issues with the sensors vs. actual wind. All they really are is a good indication of what's going on, and decisions have to be made based on each individual's experience at each site.
Stevenson has a problem that is often misunderstood, and that's that the river does not flow east to west past Bob's Beach, so west wind is usually unsailable unless one has the desire to hula all the way to the middle and back, where the wind is.
There is also a problem with the sternwheeler which is often parked right where the sensor is (or was, if it was moved) on the end of the pier, which messes up the readings. |

My experience is that it has always read high relative to other sensors in west winds. One factor might be that really strong west wind at Stevenson is typically not during a cooler marine push with well capped dense air but more like today (6/5/2013) with weak onshore flow and a deep boundary layer. This might make the wind seem less strong. I'm not saying this is for a sure a factor, just speculating... |
