Not wanting to dissuade you from your cross country romantic notion, but you could also drive to the Gorge sail for 4 days, drive to PDX, fly to
Falmouth, rent gear, and a vehicle, race for 2 days, fly back to PDX,
sail for 4 days in the Gorge and drive home. I'm guessing cross country
gas cost alone would subsidize air fare substantially.

p.s. When you come through Southern Wyoming there's a place
(about 12 miles due south of Evanston, Wy.). Called Sulfur Creek Reservoir. This can be the only place to get wind in the July wind dearth. 7.5 -5.5, clean (and very cold) water. From the statistics, you'd guess the Utah Windsurfing Association members never go anywhere else. It's a small lake with small chop, and the occasional irascible fisherman. When the jet stream is right over us and due west, and there aren’t any thunderstorms around, Sulfur Creek has dependable wind. Plus, if you get skunked, there’s always the consolation of real beer!

p.p.s with that much distance overland, you'll be needing to
make good time, but if you want info about the local lakes and their potential around SLC, check out http://www.utahwindriders.com/localsites.php
and

or PM me here, and I'll elucidate

You might consider taking I-90 on the return trip rather than I-80. You could stop and see the Badlands, Yellowstone (windsurfing on Lake Yellowstone), and Coeur d'Alene (big lake in town) too. I've done both routes, and I-90 is better by far for scenery IMHO. Not much difference in time/distance either.

And if it's windy when you are passing through Indiana, make sure you take a jog up to the Indiana Dunes beaches on Lake Michigan.

Reality check in order here, 7,000 miles at 17 MPG, which is probably generous for a van, equals 412 gallons of gas at say avg. 3.59 equals $1478.00. So you are going to spend 8 days of hard driving and all this gas money, plus you have to eat and I'm assuming sleeping in the van, so no lodging expense, for the Buzzards Bay crossing? This year the crossing isn't gonna be a crossing, just course racing or slalom and I'm sure a fun gathering of tribe, but still that is a lot of hard ass travel for two days on the Cape. You could fly, rent a car, and rent gear for less, plus have the extra time to see the sights in Mass. and R.I. Wind in southern New England is a low odds crapshoot come late spring, it could be a light air derby. For the time, money and effort driving to this one event, you could hit the AWT and the Nationals at Cabrillo Beach. You could do this trip but eight days on the road with no letup sounds like punishment, best to weigh your options, add some unforseens before you commit.

Hi Gregg, one other thought is to FLY to the Buzzards Bay event (fly into Hartford on Thursday, crash at my house and drive down with me on Friday -I'll set you up with gear) then rent a car for the drive back. That leaves you plenty of time to grab what you can on the way back. $500 one-way rental fr Hartford to Seattle for one week.

And, UPDATE, the Crossing will be a crossing! USCG stamp of approval.

WOW, THANKS !!!
Lots of great info showing up here. I really appreciate your time to type...and the great thoughts.
I have thought about most the stuff that's come up, but there's some new wrinkles also.
And I love the regional sailing spot suggestions, along the route I proposed.

It's a fluid process right now... but the stubborn side of me is still leaning towards driving. I do have the luxury of bailing at any time... or changing plans.

Thanks for any other thoughts.

As I pack... I may still abort, depending on how things turn out !!

My rule is that the time you get on the water should at least equal the time spent driving.
If it were me, I'd just spend the whole 2 1/2 weeks in the Gorge and use the money I save on gas to buy gear.

i've done a similar trip twice with mountain biking as part of the daily schedule. drive like hell the first day, land at a hotel close to a good trail, hit it at dawn, go back shower, jump in the car for the next shift. repeat. researching trail is super easy. i've since learned that stops near denver require a lot of breathing prep. also, check the ski resorts near salt lake for chair lift/gondola opp's. deer valley used to be opened thur-sunday's. dunno if it still is. otherwise, ogden has some great trials minutes away from 84. by adding the mtn bike factor, one adds a day to this trip. worthwhile? hell yeah. i was in the best shape of my life after a 3 week trip like this. to the ditch and back. what an adventure.
