Hi Dechev,

Maui Sails tend to prefer a stiff top mast, so you're doing double disservice by using a shorter mast. Basically, the top is flexing before the bottom has a chance to, so the top gets more floppy than it's supposed to.

If the top looks good, the bottom section of the mast is probably too straight and you risk damaging the battens due to the extreme angle they take.

If the bottom looks good, the top is probably ridiculously floppy.

There's sort of a middle setting, but it's nowhere near as balanced as it would be with the proper mast.

Hope that helps!

sorry that i am so confused adywind Very Happy
the original poster says he is in 15 to 20 mph winds
the mast is NOT ideal for the sail i.e. wrong
the board is a wide early planing FreeFormula

what to do ?
change the kit for those winds ? or really 15 to 20 mph?
get the correct mast = $$$
change up the fin ?? borrow one first ...

for sure the Maui Sails are mast sensitive - as are most sails
i tried a constant curve mast in a MS Pursuit 8.5
it was okay, but much better with MS 490/75
sometimes the luff is just short of 490 on a sail and i ask MauiSails if i can get away with the longer mast - they always suggest NOT to
so, if you ask on the MS forum about using a 490 on an MS-2 9.5 , i am sure there would be a resounding NO GO - regardless of the 30 % carbon content
you can use a 75 % mast on such a sail as well
the 520 will be expensive in any case and not many around used
may have seen one here recently on iwindsurf, but not sure seller will break up kit for sale
(poster did not mention whether the 490/30 he is using is even a MauiSails mast)

I'll try to borrow a 520 mast to see if its gonna make a significant difference.
I feel that my mast is pretty soft for the sail and may be a wrong bend too, I can downhaul the sail by hand only - no winch, screwdriver to wrap the downhaul line around or anything.... I can wrap the line around my hand and downhaul it to max just like this. and yes in this video the sail is with min downhaul, may be that's why the top swings like crazy or may be because the board is not powered up enough from the fin and it bounces/hits the chop a little bit more making the top of the sail to flap.
I bought a 66cm fin that should come next week, and I will update after I try it.

Your board's tail is only 60cm, so by default you are not supposed to use a fin longer than 60 cm. 50-54cm should be just fine for 9.5m sail. A 66 cm fin will slow you down too. Too late though....
