Gang,

Below is some imagery about the dreaded Southern California "heat bubble" that struck yesterday at some sites and will probably do the same today. In the images watch the "heat bubble" ooze out from the interior and over the coast. Then watch what it does to the wind graphs.

If you want to get the details head to the Weather Blog at:

http://blog.weatherflow.com/?p=13940

Or use the Weather Blog link in the left column of most pages.

You want a "bubble", try hanging around at Berkeley for a week.
That "bubble could easily cause 5-12 mph gusty holey breeze at the Basin while upwind of the Lordships can be solid 19-26mph.

The Berkeley "bubble" is really not a "heat bubble" effect on most days. The causes of the The Berkeley "bubble" are a lot more complex and harder to forecast. But this Berkeley "bubble" is what makes the Hs. Lordships roof sensor seem so accurate sometimes and so inaccurate at other times.

I did not record the actual pressures. Remember that the lines really do not reflect the reality that there is a gradient between each line not a sudden drop in pressure. It would be interesting to have someone drive with a recording barometer from the interior to the coast on "heat bubble" day.

The "Berkeley Heat Bubble, while world famous, must be caused by all the hot air circulating amongst the windsurfer's who show up and get skunked.

It was smoking today at Secos! It went from cool to hot and back to cool on the water today. You could feel the heat bubble trying to take over.

This is like the middle of summer. 63 degree water, and thermals blowing all day. PS> at 10:15 it's 25 mph with gusts to 30!!!!

Capetonian, that's why they call Cabrillo "Hurricane Gulch". I hope it's like this for the races this summer.
