Quote: | Mr Godsey, my wife has just ask the following:
"What, is he getting old or something. His forecast for Monday says:
Potentially Dangerous winds,
Since when do the forecast come with safety warnings?"
But many thanks for the heads up !!! |
Hi airwave,
Of course I am getting old... there is only one other unpleasant alternative. But the "Safety Warning" was inspired after personally watching kiters lose anything from kites, to skin, to fingers and even a leg. So I put in a forecast warning on days where the wind may be exceptionally wild. Partially for shark protection but mostly because I hate to lose paying customers.
Below you can see me about to issue a personal "Safety Warning" to a kiter on too big of a board for the conditions.

Made my first ever trip out to Tomales with a gang of Candlestick regulars.
Due to forgetfulness I was no able to rig the 3.3 I had brought; but sailed 3.7 (which was the right call after my first reach during a "puff").
Met great smiling faces; saw an impressive rescue effort from Kevin, Brad and especially Sofi (who pulled a broken down sailor half way across the bay powered only by a 3.0). Good times.

Yeah, that was a fun day at Tomales. I was a little worried b/c we didn't get there until 3:30, and it looked nuclear when we arrived... usually it just gets worse (or better)... windier and windier... good if you have smaller sails, bad if you don't. 3.7 and 77l ended up being perfect.
did you forget something so you couldn't rig your 3.3?
One sailor broke his mast right at the boom. it was still flooding, and he was about 1/2 to 2/3 the way out.

Jenn's boom Mine doesn't go down to 139.
3.7 was the right sail in the end though; it was just that first reach that had me scared

Huge thanks to Sofi and Kevin for helping me and my gear get back to the beach after breaking my mast yesterday. Thanks to everyone else who hung around and made sure I was ok while trying to de-rig in the water also. It was no easy task for Sofi to drag me in, holding onto his back foot strap, while he was on a 3.0 but he did it with style!
Bummed that I have to buy a new mast and that I'm out of the water for a week or so with a messed up hand from my wipeout but stoked to know what a great group of people I share the water (and beers) with.
Mahalo,
Dave

Hey Windfind,
The aging process comment was meant with only the greatest of respect. That same girl ask me that question nearly every day.
Having spent some time kiting and watching the mayhem first hand I must concur with your reasoning. Warning them is the only responsible thing for you to do. But I'm sure you realize that it will do little good.
Keep up the good work. We should all age so well, or die trying.

Jay,
Your photos are absolutely superb. They really capture the feeling of Grassy Point. Thanks for posting them.

I showed up at Tomales at 1:30pm to find Mack just packing up his gear to leave, He was OP on his 4.0 sail.
So after some procrastination about sailing by myself I decided to rig my 3.2 instead of the 3.6.
Yes I made the right choice as I was fully power on the 3.2 with a small glass board. Haut no doubt!
Hoping someone would show up and sail, I stayed out for and hour or so till
I was getting OP all the way across and out of control on the huge gust.
Sailed till 3pm and would have gone back out if someone would have showed up, but no one showed?
It was great to see some different people come up from the city to check out Tomales yesterday.
Marconi might have been a better choice for today, I'm sure it was out of control also.

Ted,
I punted today because the wind was way over 30 which I have determined is my limit on my smallest sail. I sailed Rod & Gun today on a 3.5 and it was insane with lulls below 20 and gusts near 40 and holes that were terrifying.
