A few big investors thrive under obama. Printing money has floated the oligarchs, but the middle class is failing. Where is the justice?

Depends on where you go. For example you don't want to venture out in Malibu after dark, you might get hit by a drunk movie star.

No

Go to a 3rd world country. We can't get there without being attacked by aliens or another dinosaur-killin' asteroid.

The question was, "Is America BECOMING a 3rd world country?" If you look at what American was in the 1980's and what it is today, it seems the tragectory is clear.

Steve...if that were true I doubt the TBT would be down 4.34% today. i.e. our bonds certainly are not trading in parity with those of our third world counterparts. What your data shows is quite disturbing...that is a huge percentage of our population does not have the skills to earn a living in this country. Their are plenty of jobs here in the Valley, we just lack the warm bodies+brains+good degrees.

Unemployment in America is not like other countries. There are hundreds of thousands of jobs advertised everyday and even more not advertised widely in the US. In other countries when there is unemployment there are few jobs not getting filled.
We are a rich country where you can get by without a regular paycheck or a welfare check.
An economy must expand and contract. Right now the whole world is contracting at the same time. Does that mean we are becoming a third tier planet?
Compared to the third world out there we are doing very well indeed.
If you compare your success on any day to your best day then you will always seem to be behind. Did you notice that your last few sessions were not quite as good as your best session ever?
Does that mean that the wind is almost gone forever?
Only a few people are getting the really good left hand rides under Obama. What about the rest of the middle class riders? When do they start getting waves?

I spent most of my life in the third world. Espats like us know why things are bad there.
It wouldn't need a meteor to turn the US quickly into a third world Country
We would just need to lower taxes to the level of Somalia, Chad, Afghanistan,Belize...
That would cause the firing of 100s of thousands of gov. workers and cancel most infrastructure repairs and those private workers.
Soldiers would be discharged or accept salaries at 10% of the little they get now.
Cops and judges would not get their tiny paychecks every week and would be forced by hunger to accept bribes.
Seen this in person.
With low enough taxes, streets would become impassable. If you get hurt and got no money you are expected to die at home.
Emergency rooms would become a service for rich people.
So would food markets. And schools.
And justice in court.
Unlike Somalia we put our money together through taxation and hired a slow ineffective annoying Gov. to provide all those things and more.
Anyone who wants out of the system because it costs too much has Afghanistan waiting as their new home. Rich Texans who signed that petition are esp welcome to leave for Somalia until we get Texas ready as its own similar third world country.

The problem is, there are far fewer tax payers today as a % of our population. If we had 75% instead of 64% in the workforce, this country would be spinning. You are correct KC, however revenue is the issue, not tax rates.

Boggs, I cannot complain. But I have so many friends that are suffering, that I'm pissed. I'm very lucky, but feel the deck is stacked against the little guy. Government and big business are equally at fault. However, government can make the changes that we need. But they won't. Just imagine what a flat tax starting at $30,000 would do to end cronyism, shady accountants, tax loopholes, lobbyists, etcetera. How much productivity and fairness would there be? 20% sounds like a pretty good corporate rate too.

Spoken like a tourist. Those of us who have actually lived in Africa know that the story is entirely different. For example. Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, levies an 85% tax rate on oil and gas companies. Government corruption magically makes that revenue disappear (primarily to Switzerland). To equate the tax regimes, and the use of tax revenues in 3rd world countries, with the situation in the US, is naive.
