Chandler, I don't envy people on the dole. For the most part I feel sorry that they've let themselves become useless cattle. I'm sorry for them because welfare has destroyed their uniqueness and creativity.

As you know, my wife is Mexican and we live in Malibu. She often points out the little filthy dirty rich kids who have no class but all the money in the world. She contrasts them with the inner city Mexican families who are very poor, but who dress their children in the cleanest, elegant and formal wear that they bought at the corner bazarre for a few dollars.

I believe in my heart that whether you are collecting SS, pension, or welfare, that you are not living to your full potential unless you find a way to give back to people. It's hard to do when you are only taking for yourself.

This ^^^^^ well stated.

Beaglebuddy...I was responding to GT, regarding Isobar's post, which I understood to be showing disdain and contempt for the British civilians during WWII. There is some "forum history" on this.

On this forum, and in my personal life, I have been supportive of veterans. You have no knowledge of my personal history or my personal choices and obligations and have no business judging me. Just as you have no business describing anyone who did not serve in the military as "mooches".

You may want to look around a bit and notice what others do to contribute to the success of our nation. Now, I will STFU, as you so eloquently demanded, regarding any conversation regarding veterans on this forum.

Winston Churchill, (one of my favorites) who fought Labour, and saved the British Empire, was ejected like tissue paper after the war. He would have saved Britain from the socialism that almost destroyed it until Margaret Thatcher brought sanity to the realm.

I'm very worried about our brethren across the pond. They haven't made many good decisions in the past. Tally Ho!

Wise words Mr. Bard! I know a disabled (severly) vet that somehow finds the strength to get out and mow my relative's lawn on his lawn tractor. The guy can barely walk. Inspiring.

Mikey's version: "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can get from your country."

lifers do it for the promise to be taken care of with a pension and medical.

BB gets it. I doubt, though, that a large percentage of "lifers" -- people who put in ≥20 years on active duty -- stay in that long just for the retirement benefits. Evidence includes the many who stay in long past 20 years and their level of dedication, almost non-existent in the corporate world. I didn't even consider that prospect until June, 1983, 15 years into my military career, and was willing to walk away if necessary until about my 18-year point, when we finally began to get some criminal commanding officers fired and I helped many military and civilian engineers and technicians get some relief from orders to work as long as we could stay awake, take a quick nap, and repeat … 24/7 for 400 straight days for no valid reason ... at office/laboratory work ... in peacetime ... in Albuquerque. The health and family toll was growing serious, including two deaths attributed in part to fatigue-induced incidents.

The draft drove me in for four years, but the next 16 were at my initiative, one assignment at a time, based on comparisons with my other options; I even sent inquiries to many prospective employers as some tours neared an end. So “lifer” is misleading. None of that matters, though, as the same basic rules and benefits apply to all of us who put in 20 years (many categories, such as doctors, pilots, and combat troops deserve and get additional benefits), and those basic benefits are what these ingrates are whining about, despite their having the same military options we all have. If these hypocrites think it’s so damned cushy, why aren’t they putting their lives and careers on the same block? Millions of volunteers are on that block as we type; why aren’t the leeches? My guess? Because they haven’t the balls, morals, dedication, sense of responsibility, or pride in their country commensurate with most military careers.

We all realize you guys are just trying to jerk my chain to trigger a rant (aka trolling), as you can’t possibly be stupid enough to believe the people who defend your right to be idiots haven’t earned their benefits. Thank you. It gives me fodder for standing up for what I ACTUALLY BELIEVE, something many of you show no capacity for. The world IS a tiny bit safer because of my efforts and risks, and a bigger chunk safer yet because of my wife’s efforts and many sacrifices in a world well beyond Top Secret.

Is it any wonder why my comments about whining, clueless, amoral ingrates is not rhetoric, but factual assessment?

Happy Easter, Mikey.

Don't let 'em nail you to a cross, too.

However, those that make the CHOICE to enlist in the armed forces, national guard, coast guard or reserves, do deserve the appreciation of our country for their service, be it cooking in a stateside base or on the front lines in a foreign country.

Those that dump on Mike because he wasn't shooting bullets, need to focus on other issues.

Don't those sheltered little babies realize that combat troops are but a very small portion of the active duty military? That soldiers need materiel, food, mail, laundry, weapons, and medical care? That MANY military personnel, combat and support alike, die and/or are gravely injured in peacetime duty, even stateside? That pilot training deliberately (in effect, to achieve realism and thus better training) kills many fliers in the lower 48 in order to reduce the number who die in combat? (Incidentally, that when Bush joined the National Guard, the unit he chose was in combat in Viet Nam?)

I want to see these cowards here tell those heroes' family survivors they don't deserve their spousal benefits because their spouses weren't being shot at.
