The John M. Olin Foundation, once one of the country’s premier conservative foundations, closed down in 2005 after a half century of operations. Among its more notable grantees were the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society, the Hoover Institution, Allan Bloom, and Charles Murray. In discussing the closing, Olin director James Piereson said, “I guess I would say, looking back on this period, that it’s worked out a lot better than we had any right to expect when we started. I’m sure some stuff failed or didn’t go anywhere, but not a lot of it.”1

The foundation grew out of the Olin Corporation—an ammunition and chemical business—in 1953, when John Merrill Olin began providing financial support to efforts to promote capitalism and fend off what he saw as encroaching socialism. He supported a variety of other causes and his foundation became a major backer of right-wing think tanks, policy institutes, colleges, and academics.2

A staunch supporter of the anti-communist right in the United States, the foundation was a key booster of neoconservatism beginning in the 1970s, especially at the American Enterprise Institute, considered the premier neocon think tank in the United States. Irving Kristol, a key intellectual architect of neoconservatism, writes that AEI’s efforts to recruit neoconservatives in the 1970s

Quote:
John M. Olin Foundation was a grant-making foundation established in 1953 by John M. Olin, president of the Olin Industries chemical and munitions manufacturing businesses. Unlike most non-profit foundations, the John M. Olin Foundation was charged to spend all of its assets within a generation of Olin's death, for fear of mission drift over time. It made its last grant in the summer of 2005 and officially disbanded on November 29 of that year after having disbursed over $370 million in funding, primarily to conservative think tanks, media outlets, and law programs at influential universities. The Foundation is most notable for its early support and funding of the law and economics movement.

How many people even know who this guy is.... Boy our wonderful right wing owned media does such a good job of educating the masses of sheep.

Do you know who Bechtel is? Here is another major right winger who has one of the largest contracing construction firms in the USA and he is not know, Three of reagans top came from that corp.

During the Gulf War of 1991, General Electric owned NBC. General Electric was one of the world's largest defense contractors, contributing to nearly every weapons system deployed in the Gulf War. The gushing coverage given to America's "smart bombs," Patriot Missiles, Tomahawks and the like, when presented on NBC, was admiring its owner's handiwork. The NBC president killed a story that even Tom Brokaw wanted aired about the "collateral" damage that the U.S. bombing inflicted onto Iraq's civilian population. Those conflicts of interest pervade America’s mainstream media

here is another giant of the conservative owned media...

Gannett Company, Inc. was founded in 1923 by Frank Gannett in Rochester, New York as an outgrowth of a newspaper business he had begun in Elmira, New York in 1906. Gannett, who was known as a conservative,[9] gained fame and fortune by purchasing small independent newspapers and developing them into a large chain, a 20th century trend that helped the newspaper industry remain financially viable.[10] By 1979, the chain had grown to 79 newspapers.[11]

In my own experience, staying true to the Denver Post brand required a certain type of Stockholm syndrome. It meant internalizing what you figure your boss and your boss's boss might deem inconvenient to print, say, before they hop on the train to Frontier Days with a posse of politicians and advertisers.

Their directives were loud and clear. No mas with the undocumented immigrants, one editor told me. Enough already about police brutality and mental illness, winced another. Ixnay the grit, they warned. And for God's sake, they said, give it a rest about the baby Jesus on the steps of City Hall.

William Dean Singleton, whose media company owns such papers as the Denver Post, recently gave a brutally frank assessment of the current state of print journalism and its failed business model in a speech in Sweden. (Yes, the same Dean Singleton who referred to Barack Obama as “Obama bin Laden.” Yes, the same Dean Singleton who is a Friend O’ Bush. And yes, the same man the NYT once called “the industry’s leading skinflint” who is now viewed in a more favorable light and is chairman of the AP.)

Study Finds Conservatives Rule Op-Ed pages -- With George Will as King

By Dave Bauder

Quote:
NEW YORK George Will's column runs in more newspapers than any writer in the nation, according to a new study by a liberal media watchdog group that concludes conservative voices such as his dominate editorial pages.

.....

Quote:
Will's syndicated column runs at least once a month in 368 newspapers with more than 26 million in total circulation, said the Media Matters for America. The organization surveyed 96 percent of the nation's 1,430 English-language daily newspapers.

"He reaches half of the newspaper readers in America," said Paul Waldman, the study's author. "He has a huge megaphone, probably bigger than anybody else in America."

Quote:
His group found that 60 percent of the daily newspapers print more conservative syndicated columnists each week than liberals. Twenty percent of the papers are dominated by liberals and 20 percent are balanced. Media Matters had no information on local columnists.

...

Quote:
Both Will and Shearer said they believe that Media Matters is right, that conservative columnists have a wider reach than liberals. It may partly be because publishers lean conservative, and editorial page editors often report to them, Shearer said.

where do these psyops people work after the leave the military? of course they work in the so called free press.

Quote:

The CNN and NPR Interns Incident
In the 1990s it came to light that PSYOP soldiers had been interning at the American news networks Cable News Network (CNN) and National Public Radio (NPR). The program was claimed by the Army to be an attempt to provide its PSYOPers with the expertise developed by the private sector under its "Training with Industry" program, the program caused concern about the influence these soldiers might have on American news and the programs were terminated.

Here is what National Public Radio reported on April 10, 2000:

The U.S. Army's Psychological Operations unit placed interns at CNN and NPR in 1998 and 1999. The placements at CNN were reported in the European press in February of this year and the program was terminated. The NPR placements will be reported this week in TV Guide.[1]

These seven posts are to prove to me that many owners of the media are conservatives. Did you notice that I agreed with you in your first posts about that?
Where we disagree is whether the media operates to make a profit like any other large industry, and whether they care about making a profit.
I believe this because I worked for a newspaper and that fact is well known to every writer at the paper. The editor was a rabid righty and was dismissed for not selling enough ads because of skewed content.
The writers were then set to writing crap about celebrities because it sells papers Baja.
If fox stops getting enough viewers they will turn into Msnbc overnite.
In fact MSNBC did exactly that when they were a boring middle of the road media outlet with declining profits.
In business profits are king.

Key,

Sorry, Obviously I am not a decent writer, a dyslexic. So getting the point across in writing is not my friend.

now of course as a business person controlling the minds you want to make a perpetual motion machine. breaking even for propaganda is a wise goal objective.

again I listed people like Olin who have given up even a billion dollars in todays money for media control. And there are others. With not one example of similar coming from the liberal side.

OK I gave you some points to that exactly. First rev moon. Second Murdoch and his New York paper. then there is the world examples of Italy media ownership, Thailand, the US government ownership of broadcasts to other nations at a loss all the time.

Next News media is not very profitable. Never has been. Where as as I pointed out owning a single top McDonalds or typical business is more profitable than the entire owning the NYT. So why would companies that make huge profits own cash losers. Simple by stopping stories about defense waste allows where you make tens of thousands times the profit selling $5.00 hammers for $10,0000.00 is much more profitable. After all just in Afghanistan over 100,000,000,000 is unaccounted for. Delivering truck loads of empty gas for 10k for years adds up to more than the NYT makes in a year,. And the media never made them accountable. Never dug into it and stuck too it. When you own the media you decide what a reporter may investigate. Great example right now was Manning he contacted the two so called liberal media NYT and Washington Post and they were not interested.

Not allowing reporters to investigate for the reasoning of "we need to make money" and only report on fluff that is cheap to dig up is a great strategy to tell reporters. again trust fund kid, richard Mellon Scaife paid his hit men reporters a million dollars a book to trash liberals. And the only paper he owned was the Pittsburgh one.

Other examples are Bill Maher a libertarian was gaining major ratings with a show buried at 11pm called politically incorrect. He was cancelled for saying that people who aim guided bombs are not brave.

Another good example is MSNBC had one liberal on their network at 9-11. It was Phil Donahoe and it was not even a political show. He had the highest ratings on the entire MSNBC and after 9-11 they fired him. Again they fired their highest rated show. Highest ratings seem to correlate to highest revenue generated. MSNBC later brought on a few token liberals when the senate and congress were won by the dems and the talk was bringing back the fairness doctrine. and now their liberals in the afternoon beat anything MSNBC ever had when it was all partisan right wingers. Note that a sit in host after a liberal was fired Cheh (young turk) (sp) in his few months even beat Fox in his last ratings for the young views for the first time any did it. They did not put him as a permanent host. Again any bean counter only would have signed him to a contract in a nanosecond. Beating Fox for the young viewer in politics, and as you know Fox has a huge demographic of over 55 which is not an advertisers core market.

Now I understand. The media makes no profits and we were being fooled into thinking the Kansas City Star wanted to make enough to keep on publishing.
It is really mind control on the part of conservatives.
I got it now. Thanks for taking the time to paste all that for me.
I am in Bali and need to go out with my wife to her favorite classic rock live band here.they play a lot of Doors and Dire Straits.
You haven't lived until you hear their version of Jimi Hendrix played on a guitar, two bamboo xylophones, and conga drums.
Signing off now.

ok, wise ash. you said before. " The far right on this board takes selective facts and makes big generalizations that do not follow.
You ever find yourself doin that?"

Do you realize you backed up your argument with not even one fact. And that you did not even counter any of the facts that I posted with one argument to counter them.

In fact, in this one you out and out lied, said that in the last post I cut and pasted. So are you are a liar, with no facts like the right wingers who practice what you eleduded to all the time? I am calling you out to show one sentence that was cut and pasted from the previous post. Then I am challenging you to dispute the facts I provided.

Just the fact that US media is rated number 47 and basically below every developed nation except as I mentioned Italy (which had a major media mogul who became president by owning the media there). I see how you can not even address that or even understand it I guess. And you turn a blind eye to the Olin and others who gave away billions for media control and you no explanation to the fact that right wingers did not care about making money with the Washington times and NYpost.

Here is another good example about the Canadian Conrad Black, (right now Austalian Ruppy is largest of any media, and oh he is so partisan neureal, not) read pages 162 and 158 again they specifically discuss how the one time largest owner of the print media in the world did not care about making money vs his political ideology being promoted. Wow exactly what you claim could never happen. Open your friggen eyes to how rabid this Kings as I call them mentality is.

Media, Profit, and Politics in Canada.
