Some video from the three days of epic January conditions. I.e., 4.5 in January might qualify as epic, maybe not in July.

JSE, Nice video & like the your tacks. Haven't been to Tomales yet. What signs do you look for in advance to know it will blow the next day and not be fogged in?

Ron, Generally the forecast for Tomales is predictable days in advance. Plus the tides are always predictable. If a NW trend is forecast, and it's before mid-June, it's a good bet Tomales will fire. Best on an ebb and I think the best swell as at the end of the flood, start of the ebb. My rule of thumb is if it's 18 by 10:00 then it's probably going to blow. Note: There is often a mid morning lull, so don't let that fool you. If the trend and forecast are good you can count on it. Bring 5.0 to 3.5 sail range, you will probably use all of them if you start early.
Not many appreciate a good tack. Thanks for the compliment.

Definitely like the tacks... also waterstarting by stepping onto the board from the down-wind side right into a rig-flip.
Years of windsurfing and I never thought to do that before :S
How is the setup looking for this weekend?
Models show stronger winds outside with it diminishing alot close to shore; wonder if Tomales actually is that sheltered, or if point-reyes / the coast help funnel the wind. |

Setup is downgraded this morning according to the computer forecast. I think there may be a weather system approaching or something. Maybe we'll get clearing winds after that.
That's a clew-first waterstart. Saves a lot of time. Very handy because you don't have to organize everything for a waterstart when the sail is flipped the wrong way. The trick is to setup for a regular waterstart like you are going to go in the direction you don't want to go, but reach way back with the back hand. Push the board around with your feet so it's pointing on the other tack pointed way downwind. Then it's just a regular waterstart with a sail flip.
