So. I ran into an old friend of mine who has 3 old but hardly used Waddell
sails from the mid 90"s and he wants to give them away. He said that 2 of the three have never ever been sailed- they are in fact virgins!!
The other one has only be sailed a handful of times.
He said he will throw them in the dumptser if I don't want them. And I don't want them.
But maybe some of you out there do.
I know what y'all are thinking......that my old friend is actually....ME!
But it's not. I just hate the fact that they would simply be thrown away.
I did tell him that he might be able to give them away at the Crissy swap meet this spring, but I know he won't make the effort.
Any takers? Lee D are you game? Anyone?........Anyone?
Please respond to this post if you're interested.

Thanks everyone.

Greg

There's a really good freeride sailor here in Berkeley who uses mainly 1989 Windwing sails, some as new as 1993, matched to the 2011 RRD slalom boards. His sails are worn out, totally patched and taped, and nobody his size can match up to him.
Why not use them? They're just as good as your new stuff, but feel softer and rotate easier. If they're cammed sails, use a RDM on them, if you're lightweight, and use a SDM CC if you're heavier than 170 lbs.
If they're wave sails, they work just fine as is, with a little less downhaul than the new sails, maybe down to wrinkles of 2 battens down from the mast tip.
There is almost no difference in speed between those sails and the newest sails, they handle better because they're much lighter in weight and rotate much easier.
The only downside is extreme top end when you're overpowered, but it's often easier to change down to a smaller size for those conditions.
My main sails are mid '90's, and match up well to anything.

Doesn't Cal Berkekey sailing school take them.
You probably could stand them up at the fence there,
put a "free" sign on them and someone would eventually grab them.

That's Naish, circa '97 Mana 6.2 sail, taken from the vid RIP.
Cal Sailing doesn't want your Waddell sails, thank you. They throw away sails more than 3 years old, and 95% of their 40 rigged sails are '11 or '12.

What tipped you off? The pink sail?

They're plastic. If stored out of the sun, they're as good good now as they ever were, which is damned good. Today's sails handle big gusts better, as Lee said, but may give up some bottom end -- early planing -- in the process.

I recently took out a 2001 sail to see how it handled nuke conditions in the Gorge. It was so damned great I had my loft build my smallest 2012 and 2013 sails identical to it (they still make them due to popular demand) and use some of its features in the rest of each quiver.

Try 'em out. The price is right. If you hate 'em, there have to be some Waddell buffs Jonesing for them. If not, what have you lost?

Steve...
I bought the Mana 3 cambered '97 sails at the trade show in '96, both 5.7 and 6.3, but they were blue and yellow. Those were my last two new sails that I spent money on. Lots of roach, draft back, very long booms.
Currently using a 6.5 Koa and g/f using a 6.5 Noa of that exact year, no cams for us.
My oldest competitive sail is a 6.4 1993 GaastraCourseRace. It equals anything made now, and is much lighter to boot.
