Santa Cruz through San Francisco had powerful surf over the weekend. Yes, there was quite a contrast in size between background surf and the large sets when they arrived. I was not at Ocean Beach SF, but heard about and saw some pictures and video of the spectacular large surf there. So Mother Nature delivered the goods pretty well here.

Here are some photo links of the Big Swell in case you have not seen yet-

Big Swell photos including OB

OB photos

Also there was an outrageous OB video on Vimeo that unfortunately was taken down maybe due to its super surfporn nature, or maybe because the footage is actually worth money. The most harrowing shot was a Miami Vice-like cigarette boat loaded with people getting too close in and then trying to race back out, hitting a big wave lip, and getting vertical. Might have been some backs broken there upon landing.

Well figure....
Big sets at Mavs was pushing 20', what does that translate to at OB?
Prolly around 10', undisputed.
And what periods are needed for surfer's to make the paddle out at OB?
Usually more than 16 seconds, as OB is a beach break with no difined bottom contours.
It was certainly big ridable at OB.
Which is not nearly as big as it can get.
