I think our auto licensing and regulation laws are a good model for gun laws. Prove you're registered, insured and capable and off you go. But you still can't drive a AA fuel dragster on the street. Besides, they're a bitch to park. _________________ /w\ |

And the exhaust noise would set off every car alarm in the lot. But think how good they would be for hunting deer.
What? Now that you are trying to take my rifle you want to take my hunting break too? |

Agreed. It should be registration for firearms, including timely inspections and a title proving legal ownership. Part of the inspection includes firing a test bullet, which is then filed and archived.
And owners should have a license to operate, granted only after proper training by an approved (licensed) instructor and passing a competency test. The license should include a picture and require renewal on a timely basis.
Just like car registration and license to operate.
How about insurance?

Licensing and regulations will do nothing to prevent all the gun violence.
The perps are breaking the law! Why would they care about silly regulations when they buy their guns from a trunk of a bud's car at 1AM, in a dark parking lot? |

Obviously, the parking lot needs lights. |

zirtaeb--the fact of registration as a requirement begins to develop a data base on legal guns, and perhaps on ammunition as well. Then the risks of a legal gun owner selling to a criminal start to come into play. It will slow that down, but not stop it. Right now, gun show sales to un-documented buyers is one of the major sources of guns that end up sold out of a trunk on the streets of Oakland.
Don't let the search for a perfect solution stop us from making progress. |

Yeah, I guess there's little need for a mom to own an AR-15, several pistols, and the whot.
Big Blue and Orwell's '84 come into mind.
If you take guns away from everyone, only the crooks and the cops..which could be construed as crooks, will have the guns. |

I got an idea. Why don't we subsidize a relocation to Texas for all gun owners, and let them shoot it out...the survivors can keep their guns, we confiscate the rest. |

I have not heard one constructive comment from the pro gun people. Their attitude seems to be do nothing, or arm everyone which would lead to more senseless killing. Although registration won't stop this problem, it just might slow things down. The big problem which seems to be on the rise is not with criminals, but the mentally deranged being able to obtain guns. More guns makes no sense. We need to make it harder for these looneys to get their hands on a weapon. |
