Can you imagine the reaction of a standstill WSer who hadn't seen the rig on the beach as he blew by them in essentially no wind?

Unfortunately, you're looking at the future of Formula racing here also.
Just got back from PuertoRico. Saw a guy on a kite go from LasMarias to Condado and back in less than 30 minutes. Much lower downwind angles, much higher upwind angles than Formula. He was using a kite, in winds around 7-17mph. He seemed to be going just higher than 45 degrees into the wind, and of course, much lower downwind.
LasMarias to Condado is around 3.5 miles, I think.
